LIEN INTO SH APE
FOR FIRST GAME
Strenuous Practice I Bringing
Squad into Good Condition;
Work on Aerial Attack
With but ten days remaining be
fore the Nebraska Cornhusker's
opening MLaauuii Villey game wiili
the Ames Cyclones, Coach Ernest
Bearg, head football mentor is work
ing his pigskin luggers at full speed.
Practice Tuesday and Wednesday
consisted of hard scrimmage, per
fecting fake plays, line smashes and
drilling on the air line formation.
Beaig intends to have a passing team
at Nebraska this year that will be
foremost in the Valley conference.
Nebraska, the team that is noted
from coast to coast as one of the
formidable line attacking elevens will
continue to uphold that reputation
this year aftr Coach Bag perfect
the large number of line plays that
he has up his sleeve.
Three backfield candidates, How
ell, Presnell and Oelrich, are develop
ing into the fastest aggregation of
backs in the conference, and they do
not only possess speed but have an
abundance of football brains com
bined with weight and experience.

All three men featured in every game
last season and look better this sea
son in practice than ever before.
Three Veteran Show Well
Howell played his first varsity
football last year and was the sensa
tion of the Missouri Valley with his
terrifice drives through the line. He
plays the position of half and full
back. Glenn Presnell and Arnold
Oehlrich, two backs of last year's
team are clamping down on their
bids for regular backfield positions
on Bearg's eleven.
Both Presnell and Oehlrich carried
the brunt of the battle last year in
widn end runs and drives throu.
the line. Sloan, Elkins, Bronson,
and Voris are valuable backs that
can be put into the Husker machine
without weakening the least detail.
Practice last night consisted of the
usual evening punting exercises fol
lowed by a series of place kicks and
goal kicking. Elkins, Bronson, How
ell and Sloan are getting into fine
shape and are bqoting out punts for
an average of 60 yards regularly.
After this workout.Line Coach Oakes
took over the linemen and Bearg
and Black took charge of the back
field for a 30 minutes drill on funda
mentals.
Second and Third Teams Scrimmage
The rest of the practice session was
spent in scrimmage. Coach Bearg I
took his picked eleven down on the
soft tuft of Memorial Stadium field
for some secret signal practice and
j the second and third team staged a 1
fast scrimmage on the practice field.
The white team was made up of
Bronson, Voris, Witte and Farley in
the backfield. Munn, Raisch, Grow,
Lucas, Toms, Shaner and Simic in
the line. The red team had Peaker,
Beck, McBride, Sloan, Ray, Craig,
Zuver, Sprague, Lewandowski, Drath
and Schulz.
The team that will start against
the Cyclones on Memorial Stadium
field October 1 ia not definitely de
cided upon as yet but from the out
look it will be Lawson and Lee at the
wing positions; Howell, Oehlrich,
Captain "Jug" Brown, and Presnell
in the backfield; Richards and Ran
dalls at tackle; McMullen and Holm
at guard, and Ted James at center.
IN THE VALLEY
By JACK ELLIOTT
Coach Noel Workman, the Iowa
State football mentor is preparing his
pigskin luggers for the opening game
with Nebraska at Lincoln on October
1. Cool weather has favored the
Cyclone coach and he is putting his
team through stiff er workouts every
day, the one Monday being the most
grueling of the year. For the re
mainder of the week the Cardinal and
Gold coaches will concentrate on an
offense for the opening game with
I Nebraska. Saturday two picked
j teams will go through the first game

of the year on State field. Next

defensive plays.
Along with the report from Iowa
comes a similar report from the camp
of the Jayhawkers that Coach Cap
pon is putting his Kansas footballers
through some intensive training, pre
paring for the opening game with the
Grinnell Pioneers. Three new back
field men have reported to Cappon
and things in Lawrence look rosy for
the Grinnell-Kansas game. The
candidates who reported are Harold
Schmidt, Anthony Propernick, and
Art Lawrence. All three men are
out for backfield positions.
The age-old riddle is fluttering
around the Cornhuiker camp and that
it, "Will everyone be eligible for the
opening Missouri Valley game."
Dame rumor has it that Dan McMul
len, Bill Bronson, Lloyd Grow, and
Arnold Oehlrich are ineligible on the
registrar's barometer. Oehlrich, the
Husker back seems to be plenty hard
hit and Bronson, Nebraska quarter is
only credited with eleven hours work
for last semester.
The first real battle which will be
open to the eager eyes of the Corn
husker fans will be staged Saturday,
according to head football Coach
Bearg. It will be a full time game
and be an opportunity for the Ne
braska coaching staff to find out the
weak points in the Husker machine.
Bearg is allowing for ineligible men
and intends to work with plenty of
reserve material.
