"Choppy" Rhodes it Satisfied With
Candidates; Sees Opposition
To Varsity Eleven
Amid clouds of dust and under an
unusually torrid sun, Nebraska's
yearling football enthusiasts official
ly opened th 1927 season on the
1 drill field Friday afternoon. A
crowd of approximately 100 gridsters
brayed the heat and gathered for
an exhaustive workout tinder the di
rection of Assistant Coaches Kem
and Lehman. Head Coach "Choppy"
Rhodes did not arrive until the
Saturday afternoon workout was
under way.
This year's squad has fewer out
standing stars than the usual year
ling turnout. However, enough
backfield men and line men are on
hand for ''Choppy" to pick out a
multitude of teams. He expressed
himself as being "satisfied" with the
large turnout and predicted plenty
of opposition for the Varsity.
Frahm Look Good
Thus far, it is impossible to pick
out players and predict that they
will go "good" during this season.
Frahm, 185 pound fullback, hails
from Beatrice and should be a valu
able asset as a triple-threat man,
Burgeson, blonde athlete from Hoi
drege, showed up well in Saturday's
practice. A prospective Varsity cen
ter is Phillips, husky David City pro
tege. During his high school career,
he never failed to secure a high rat
ing. "Bob" Young, another candi
date with a prep school reputation,
journeyed from Norfolk for a chance
at a berth on the team.
Plenty of beef and speed is appar
ent from a cursory examination of
the guards and tackles. Coach Leh
man haa them under his wing during
the "sweat" practices of Friday and
Saturday. Lehman, in addition to
his coaching duties, is an instructor
in the military department.

YEAR'S ACTIVITIES
New Student Urged to Com Out for
Outside SporU Sponsored by
Women' Association
Newly entering students are urged
to come out for the extra-curricular
sports sponsored by the Women's
Athletic association. Membership in
the association is attained by earn
ing a sufficient number of points
and reporting for practice through
out the sport season.
Hockey and tennis are the first
activities of the fall term. The
hockey tournament will be held at
the end of six weeks of practice.
To be eligible for tournament play
one must have reported a minimum
of 10 times during the six weeks.
It is not necessary to have a knowl
edge of the game at the beginning
of the season, because instruction is
given during the practice hours by
competent coaches. The four o'clock
hour every Thursday has been espe
cially set aside for freshmen and
newly entering students unfamiliar
with the game. Tuesday at four
o'clock has been reserved for Soph
omores. Wednesday at the same
hour juniors and seniors will report
for practice. "Mixer," or general
practices, are scheduled for Monday
at 5 o'clock and Friday at 4 o'clock.
It is advised that every devotee of
the sport get in a minimum of two
practices each week until the end of
the season.
No coaching is given in tennis.
All girls wishing to enter the tourna
ment should spend a minimum of
five practice hours on the courts
near Bessey hall within the next two
weeks.
