This is rather a dark picture. There is probably
some truth about the larger chapters being necessary
to keep up expensive houses. But there must also be
truth in the optimist's reasons for the growth of this
school.
Perhaps neither argument is correct. Both sides
have been argued by various students since the facts
of the large pledge lists have been known. The editor
welcomes any other suggestions. For the present, let
it be hoped that the optimist is right.

BIGGER, IF NOT BETTER
The lengths of the fraternity and sorority pledge
lists appearing in this issue of The Daily Nehraskan
seem to tell one of two stories. Either this has been
a prosperous year for Nebraska, and consequently
more of its young people are getting the benefits of a
college education ; or else the craze for new houses for
Greek-letter organizations has made larger chapters
necessary.
From every corner of the campus comes the story
of the "best rush week ever." Registration figures also
show an increase in attendance. Every organization
found plenty of material to select from. The hotels
were crowded before the students became settled in
their fraternity, sorority, and boarding houses.
Let us hope that the main reason for the increased
attendance, and the swelling of the pledging lists, is
due to the ever-increasing idea that a college education
is of unlimited value. It not only gives the young
people an i opportunity to broaden their views on life
and to learn professions, but in many instances to dis
cover their life work by contact with the different
fields of knowledge.
An optimist, at least, would attach this significance
to the enlarged pledging lists.
What would the pessimist say?
. Undoubtedly, that the University of Nebraska is get
ting bigger, but not better. He would probably com
ment on the extravagance of the fraternities and soro
rities as evidenced by their new houses. Therefore
the larger chapters. Someone must pay for the
houses, and there is "strength in numbers."
lie would go on to argue that the larger the Uni
versity grows, the less chance there is for real scholastic
effort and personal contact between faculty and stu
dent body. Consequently, as the University seems to

They also met the faculty, just as a fraternity rushee
would meet an alumnus.
Now they must wait in awe until next Thursday
morning at 10 o'clock when they will be formally
initiated into this rather large fraternity of ours. We
are sure that between Doctor Condra and the pres
ident of the Innocents, they will be properly initiated
at that time, and filled with enough "Nebraska spirit"
to last through four collegiate years and several more.
The pledging process last evening, better known
as the Chancellor's reception, was a marked success.
A fair number of new students were there, although
the rain kept many away. (But when the editor of
The Daily Nebraskan is satisfied with the representa-l
tion at any affair, it must be a good one; nothing is
easier than to write editorials bemoaning the attendance
at University functions.)
New students undoubtedly made acquaintances at
the reception which will continue through their college
careers. Most of the freshmen men seemed interested
in meeting faculty members and those of their own
sex. Many of the faculty men with whom they chatted
were probably professors in whose classes the wily
freshmen were registered. It is remarkable how stu
dents so young in the University can grasp the time
tried practices of the upperclassmen.
A few of the freshmen women, on the other hand,
evidenced a well-known co-ed tendency they appeared
more interested in the freshmen men than In learning
about the University of Nebraska and their fellow
classwomen.
As for the faculty, they seemed earnest in their
desire to get the newest members of the school off on
the right foot. Many of them, no doubt, would rathet
have been with their friends, than talking to freshmen;
but if that was the case, they concealed it.
And now the students are off on the right foot
Next comes the freshman convocation and after Ljat
the initiates are ready to take their places along with
the rest of the student body, as loyal Cornhuskers.
Would anyone recognize the old "Oily Six" and
"Slippery Seven" under their new names the "Oily
Three" and the "Slippery Ten?"
