As the late President Burton of
Michigan has said, "regardless of the
opinion of the college men and wo
men, they go calmly on their -ways,
patiently, painstakintrlv seeking for
knowledge."
The student has a responsibility to
the society which educates him. His
education is not merely for himself.
Many prominent men can be found to
take the side of the University men.
As for the men themselves, they
should follow a course, say Marti,
between that principle of Plato that
says an institution dies with the mis
use1 of its basic principle, freedom:
and Emerson's advice that, "iree
should the scholar be, and brave."

Harvard University has decided to
follow the customs of British and
European universities and substanti
ally cut the length of time in the
classroom. The plan will probably
be instituted during 1927-1928, and
its purpose is to free the student
from continual supervision and afford
him greater opportunity for individ
