HUNGER SPEAKS
AT CONVOCATION

English Law is Speedy
Enclish law. he told the audience,
is verv speedy: Judge Munger then
related the murder case which he
had witnessed the trial of while in
England. The whole process includ
ing the imnanalling of the jury, hear
ing of both sides, the discussion, the
verdict rendered by the jury, and the
sentence by the judge took just fifty
three minutes. Comparing this speedy
disDersal of justice with our long
drawn out murder trials that some
times run into weeks end months be
fore any decision is reached, he ex
plained the reason as due to the way
in which they handle their witnesses,
never questioning them more than
from three to fifteen minutes. The
judge having complete charge of the
case can direct it: the different sys
tem of lawyers used there where a
soliciter looks up all of the evidence,
makes a brief of it, and gives it to
the barrister who presents the case
before the court with never having
spoken to his defendant or the main
witnesses.
In his closing remarks, Judge Mun
ger expressed regret that with all of
our commercial advances, our ad
vances in science and in other ways,
that we should be so far behind in
our administration of justice, and
that our laws and practices should be
so filled with technicalities that make
justice so hard to administer. Re
expressed his hope for our future
law system in the law schools of the
country, and in the proper training
of young lawyers.
