used them to pierce their
t sts and draw through the flesh
thick rawhide thong which ended
it the top of a red and black striped
pole in the center of a circle. ,
"Under the scorching summer sun,
their bodies splashed with color, they
leaped and danced until they became
exhausted or fainted. Imagine the
Uure of the rawhide tugging in
the bare flesh with every stir."
Sometimes a chant accompanied
this revel, the great religious event
f the year. Gathered around was
the whole tribe watching the cruel
(lelf-torture of the young braves.
"Realizing the harm and uselessness
of this ancient dance the government
forbade; it. Then these knives," in
dicating the five BharP and carved
capons, "started the little journey
which ended in the museum, giving us
the only authentic set of Sun Dance
knives known," he added proudly.

came to himfwhen the government
stopped the dance to ask him what
to do with tile sacred knives.
Since the Great White Father in
Washington would punish him if he
kept them, and the Great Spirit
would punish him if he destroyed
them the old Indian ws in a dilem
ma, "Omaha Charley relieved him of
the puzzling question and the knives
at the same time," related Mr. Black
man. "In 1906 Omaha Charley's
collection was put in the museum."
"White men made these," be
lieves Mr. Blackman. "See the bone
handles and nails. And they are of
steel. Really, I think they are vet
erinary's knives. Before the settlers
came the Indians must have used flint
knives."
With the dying of this custom
much cruelty has been prevented but
Mr. Blackman sees more in the Sun
Dance. "It was symbolic of all na
ture and the attempt to conquer the
cosmic elements.
"Think of the courage and the de
votion to religion of the Indian youth
who mutilated and tortured himself
for an ideal," and, he concluded, "we
white men won't even get out of a
warm bed once a week to go to
church."

AltDve is a group of promising freshman track and field men whose performances to date indicate that the
Cornhuskers have a lot of fast material coming up for next year. In the upper left, No. 1, is Walter Connor,
Grand Island pole vaulter. No. 2 shows Art Easter, Cambridge, who can today best any of the varsity sprinters
and Fred Rhodes, Sioux City, who has been pushing varsity time in the 440. No. 3 shows Fait "Chief" Elkins,
whose all-around performances have been the sensation of the tri-color meets this spring. Harold Trumble,
Cambridge hurdler, who tied the national interscholastic record in the high hurdles last year in the national
meet at Chicago, is seen on the marks in No. 4. Trumbie has beaten the best the varsity has this year fairly
consistently. No. 5 shows Dale Bauer, Holdrege, getting over the bar in the high jump. The new jumping
standards which prevent the cross-bar being held on by the hand are also shown. Howard Sneathen, Dawson
half-miler is set to go in No. 6. Sneathen has been running the 880 in close to varsity time. No. 7 shows Wil
liam Ossian, pole vaulter from Stanton, and Claud Thompson, Brookfield, Mo., who has been showing up well
in sprints and hurdles. The last group at the right shows George Miller, Havelock's all-around star, Raymond
Raue, high jumper and one of the best freshman pole vaulters Nebraska has had in years, and Don Donisthorpe,
Norfolk sprinter.
At The Theatres
"The Night of Love," at the Lin
coln this week, we predict, will make
motion pictures in Lincoln. In the
first place here is a new story with
a different plot and handled in a dif
ferent manner. Then the great team
of lovers, Ronald Colman and Vilma
Banky put the original thrill in love.
The story opens with a wedding in
a gypsy camp, and the young couple
are in the heights of delight, when in
rides the feudal loro and claims the
bride. The girl kills herself in the
lord's house and Colman swears
revenge and becomes the Robin
Hood of the time. A fair queen
of France is brought to marry
the villain and stalwart Colman cap
tures her and proves to be a real
caveman, with a cave and all the
trimmings.
American Story with ForeifB
Treament
"White Gold," at the Orpheum, is J
the best treatment oi ine ioreign
angle, yet produced in America.
Jetta Goudal and Kenneth Thompson
furnish a strong appeal through the
medium of glances and shrugs and
the lack of subtitles is very noticabie.
A strong psychological feeling has
been transfered to the screen.
The plot is simple, a son marries
a Spanish wine ihop girl and takes
her to live at his father's ranch near
the Mexican border. The father re
sents the intrusion of this outsider
and makes things as unpleasant as
posible. A stranger comes and is so
attracted by the woman's beauty
that he stays and works. The father
does all he possibly can to add to the
discomfiture of the pair.
