THE DAILY NEBR'aSKAN . HUSKERS WORK OUT DEFENSE Coach Black Drills Two Squads On Five Man Defense Tactics Coach Black sent his first two teams through a lengthy scrimmage yesterday as he watched the results of the individual instruction and and drill on five-man defense Btress' ed during the past week. Smoother team-work and more accurate basket shooting was noticeable in the work out. The first squad, which was com postd of lettermen, had Captain Smaha and Klepser as forwards, Elliot at center ,and Andrcson and Gerelick oa guards. , The quintet which formed the opposition had Brown and Othmer at the forwards, Page at center, and Morrison and Holm at the guards. The defense work of Morrison and Holm was a feature of the scrim mage. They held down the opposing forwards sufficiently to enable the second team to run up a 20-to-16 score on the lettermen. Othmer was high point man of the two groups, team this year. Only two lettermen have returned from last year's squad 4. nd chances for newcomers to make the team are excellent. We note with interest that the University of Wisconsin basketball team is to drop the five man defense. For years this stylo of piny has been linked with the short passing game of the Badgers. Instead of using tho spread formation on the court th9 Wisconsin quintet will use the man to man style of defense, already used by the majority of Big Ten teams The passing of the five wnn de fense from Wisconsin, a school long converted to this style of play, means but one thing. The speeding up of the cage game. For muny years the five man defense hns been the ob ject of much criticism. The game has been slowed up and stalling has become an art under tho domination of this method of court play. For the sake of athletics we are glad to see the five man defense go into the discard along with the mass forma tions of football. and boil In water, do not boil into a gallop afterward. We are patiently vaiting for the great program of inter-mural ath letics to get under way. At ty'e be ginning of the school year much was said concerning the elaborate plans that had been made for this form of athletics within the university. This was one of the reasons that the field house was built and when it was completed we expected to see some thing done. However, inter-mural athletics are in the same old rut ns usual and it looks as if they will re main there. Now You Tell One Radio interference is a nuisance, we admit, but candidly we believe that the following clipped from an exchange and passed on by the Syra cuse Journal-Democrat is slightly ex aggerated to say the least: A June bride asked her husband to copy a recipe over the radio one morning. He got two stations at once. One was broadcasting morning ex ercises. The result was: Hands on hips, place one cup of flour on shoulders, raise knees and depress toes and wash thoroughly in 1-2 cup of milk. In four counts raise and lower the legs and mash four hard boiled eggs in a seive. Repeat six times. Inhale 1-2 teaspoon of bak ing powder and 1 cup of flour. OSCAR NORLING It looks very much as though wrestling is to be placed on a firm basis at the University of Nebraska. Much interest was shown in this sport of Greek origin during the inter-fraternity contests and now Dr. Clapp, head coach, announces a schedule for the coming year that is the hardest that any Husker grapplers have ever faced. Seven dual meets have been book ed with schools in the middle west and the team will participate in three open meets. This gives the Nebraska men ten contests in which to show their ability and nnder the direction of Dr. Clapp they are sure to make a good showing for the Scarlet and Cream.
