Compulsory Drill Is State-Wide Question (Contmued From Page One) the movement by political observers, although they admit at the same time that the clement behind it is less powerful than several years ago. The main argument of the Am erican Legion posts and leaders of other organizations in favor of the drill have been from a consideration of national defense. To University authorities and professors, it is more i question of whether or not the University is to have jurisdiction over ichool matters. The fear is express ed that if the question of drill as a required subject is settled by popular vote it would establish a precedent for similar interference in other sub jects. Physical education, now a re quired subject for women students might arouse some day a similar re ferendum, as might required English, or modern language in the college of arts and sciences. The first shipment of specimen soils from the deep well being drill ed near Fairbury was received re cently by the conservation and sur vey division. W. H. Ingersoll, tem porarily connected with the division, is keeping a log of the drilling. An other shipment was received from Chadron where a deeper well is be ing drilled. No public information concerning the wells can be given out by the division until the work is en tirely completed. A state law re quires a report from all deep-well drilling, so that the conservation and survey division may have the infor mation in it sstudies of the state. H. Bar bour, curator of the museum, and Phil Orr, special student in peleon tology. The bones have been crated and are ready for shipment to Lin coln. The body of the mammoth will be dug out next fall when the ditch is dry again. The specimen is of the Elephas Columbi type of which the University museum has several.
