t THE DAILY NEBRASKA SOONERS ARE PLENTY TOUGH Reports Owen Frank, Who Scouted Oklahoma-Southern Mthodut Game BEARG GROOMS RESERVES Football at Nebraska this year is, .Just one struggle after another. That's the way It looks to close fol lower! of the sport. The "easy" games, when the team jets a little rest against a "set-up" opponent, have been peculiarly absent from the Husker schedule this fall, and from all appearance will continue to bo missing throughout the season. With Ksnsas disopsed of, and half the schedule over, the Cornhusker find themselves facing Oklahoma, Drake, then the Kansas Aggies, and finally Notre Dame. Does that look easy? Regulars Cat Off E.y Yesterday Coach Bearg let the regulars off with the routine work and a' drill on signals, whilo the sec ond string bucked the fnshmen in a lively scrimmage. The first -string consisted of Rhodes, Presnell, Msndery, and Jug Brown in the backfield, and Sprogue, Ed Weir, Raisch, Hutchinson, Tos pisil, Schols and Joe Weir. Lonnie Stiner was watching the plays with his right hand in a plaster cast, and Bobby Stephens was standing on one leg on the sidelines. Some hard work wil surely be the bill before the week is over, in pre paration for the third home contest with the Oklahoma Sooners. Oklahoman Ar Big Sometimes it seems to be the in herent nature of scouts to report that the future opponents has great strength. But this time Coach Owen Frank, who scouted the Oklahoma team in action against the Texas Methodists, says that the Sooners have a big team which will not be easy for Nebraska. The Oklahoma aggregation, under the instruction of Coach Bennie Owen, is improving constantly, and though they lost to Drake, will pre sent a formidable opposition to the Huskers next Saturday. Oklahoma's feat last year in smearing the Husk er's chances for a championship lends strength to the statement. Coach Bearg will prepare this week for that game. Mid-season has come, and the Huskers will hit their stride now, if ever. A steady imnrnvpment has been noticed since Nebraska met Illinois in the opener, and from now on fans can see the real aggregation which Coach Bearg has. Scherar Sect Bulldog Looking a little further into the future, Nebraska will have another tough game when it meets Drake, at Des Moines, November 7. Coach Leo Scherer scouted the Bulldogs last Saturday, and he too reports a tough opponent for Nebraska. Had Drake had more of its regu lars in the lineup against Grinnell, he says, there would have been a dif ferent score. Drake defeated the Grinnell team 7 to 6. After Drake comes the Kansas Aggie game at Manhattan, and then a rest of a week before what is ex pected to be the classic of the season Notre Dame at Lincoln on Thanks giving Day. Valley Standing Missouri Valley standings this week show Ames and Missouri in a tls for first place honors, figuring on the percentage basis. Neither team has lost a game so far, but both have played only two conference games and future conteots will likely tell the story. Drake comes third and Nebraska fourth. The Bulldogs have played' four games, winning three and drop ping one, while the Huskers have halved their two Valley games be tween the win and lose columns. Misouri's defeat of Kansas Aggies last Saturday ran true to the dope, but the fact that a lone drop-kick was the only margin of victory gives it a different aspect. Ames put the damper on Wash ington to the tune of 28 to IS, while Drake won from Grinnell by one point Valley contests this week include Oklahoma gaainst Nebraska, Missouri against Ames at Columbia, Kansas against Drake at Lawrence, and Okla homa Aggies against Grinnell at Stillwater. EXPECT HARD RUN SATURDAY Cross Country Team Looking For Stiff Competition From Sooners CAPTAIN LEWIS INJURED While the Husker harriers were taking an easy victory from Kansas on the home course Saturday, Okla homa, the Nebraska distance men's jured opponent this week end, was also winning her second race of the season, debating Southern Metho dists. Except for Captain Lewis, who injured his side, the Scarlet and Cream runners are none the worse for their muddy race with the Jay hawkers. Coach Schulte was pleased with the showing made by the team Sat urday, but expressed regret that no more men were reporting for the sport this fall. The Husker team shows power, but, according to the coach, stiff competition to' make the team will bring the runners up to a better standard. Tryouts will be held today at 4 :30 o'clock among the eligible Varsity men who di dnot run in the meet Saturday. The picking of the team who will compete against Oklahoma will depend on the time made, and the showing of these run ners today. Among the men who show pos sibilities of displacing some of the team members are McCartney and Chatfield, alternates, and Jack Ross, Kelley, and Roberts. Ross has been held down this fall by an abscssed tooth, but has been going better the past week. The Sooner team defeated South ern Methodist last Saturday in their second dual meet, but this is a non conference school, so the rating of the teams is unknown. However, the Oklahoma harriers defeated Drake the week before, which indi cates that they will be much strong- he largest selling Buy a dozen Superlative in quality, the world-famous VENUS PENCILS give best service and longest wear. VALLEY HARRIERS FINDING PLACES MUtourl, Loies to Kama Affle While Ante Triumph of Drake Bulldog As Kansas was losing its second dual cross country run of the season, to Nebraska, other Missouri Valley schools were finding their apparent positions among the distance run ners of the Valley. Two other teams were also losing their second dual run. Misouri fell before the Kansas Aggies as easily as before Nebraska two weeks ago. The Ag gies placed five runners before the first Missouri runner. Oklahoma was winning over a non-conference team, but defeated Drake the week before. Drake on the other hand lost to Ames Satur day for a second defeat Ames was running their first conference race. They were defeated the week before by Minnesota. Conger of Ames came in four hundred yards ahead of the second runner Saturday, displaying great possibilities for an individual championship for the Ames runners at least. The individual performers to date include Conger of Ames, Ruth erford of Oklahoma, who is cham pion; Kimport of Kansas Aggies, who was runner-up last fall; and Lawson of Nebraska.
