It was under terrific strain but stood up admirably, giving all that could bo expected of it. And all this time, tho 150 students in tho University) Library reading room studied on, or tried to, in spito of tho noise, just as though thero were no raging fire in tho immediate vicinity. Did they know that tho 150,000' gallons,' o water pumped from tho university cistern was un able to put out tho faro? Yes, and thoy also know why it couldn't put out tho firo, namely because thero wasn't any fire. Tho nozzlo was directed into an- other outlet of tho cistern. If you think tho university cistern wa3 on fire, it wasn't Tho Lincoln Fire Department merely borrowed 150, 000 gallons of tho water which drains off of university roofs, and immediately returned it from whence it camo, as one should always do with borrowed articles. Tho water was borrowed to mako tho final testa of Lincoln's new fire truck, which will be "ready for oper ation after these final under writer's tests are passed on at a council meeting. Tho six-cylinder truck, delivered about a week ago, is one of the very best makes. It will go sixty miles an hour. It has a low-speed motor which makes 1100 or 1200 revolutions per minute. The boro is 5 1-2 by G inches. The cost of the machine was $12,000. Although the swishing noise at first distracted tho students in the library and neighboring buildings, they became so accustomed to it that it was actually necessary. When the engine was stopped before begin ning another test, the students could n'l study at all, so intense was the oppressive calm. P. R. Higgins, delivery engineer from the factory, conducted the tests. He was assisted by V. A. Blockwitz, master mechanic of the Lincoln Fire Department and Cap tain Barney of Engine Houso No. 3. Tho pump was tested at pressures of 120, 200 and 250 pounds per aquaro inch. At 120 pounds, tho pumping capacity was 833 gallons a minute It was also tested lor prcssuro with smaller tips on tho nozzjo. While a test was being mado with a one-inch tip, Mr. Blockwitz estlmat nri that thnv could shoot a stream of water above and over University Hall, from where th6y were standing on It Street MARIE TIFFANY APPEARS TONIGHT WITH ORCHESTRA (Continued from Pago Ono.) the two years in which ho has been its conductor.
