MARTYRDOM OF THE COLLEGE
COMIC
Tho month of April has shown us
tho college comic magazine in n new
role. At Boston University an issuo
of Tho teanpot was devoted to the
R. 0. T. C. and its editors had some
rather hilarious fun with tho student
soldiers. Tho Dean, under whoso
jurisdiction the magazine comes,
suppressed the issue nnd demanded
tho resignation of Miss Henrietta
Perkins, the editor responsible,
Whon tho affair took that turn it
immediately became good for news
paper space and the editor's picture,
reprints from the magazine, nnd in
terviews from the Dean appeared in
the press.
It is possible for one to sympa
thizo with the outraged fceling3 of
tho Dean but, at the same time, no
one can intelligently aprove the ef
fectiveness or the wisdom of the
means ho took to protect the R. 0.
T. C. from the onslaughts of Henri
etta. He justified his action, if we
may judge i'im his interviews, on
the grounds that Tho Beanpot had
been flippant a rather remarkable
criticism to moke of a comic maga
zine; and that the department satir
ized was doing commendable -work.
As to this last argument, opinions
differ. Granting, however, that it is
true, even then it is not sound justi
cation for the Dean's policy. Tho
R. 0. T. C. is not a sacred institu
tion, even if its work is worthy.
There is no reason why it should not
bo compelled to submit to criticism
If the R. O. T. C. is as valuable and
as substantial an institution as the
Dean evidently believes it to be,
the giggles of a comic magazine can
not seriously menace its existence
On the other hand, if it is not able
to withstand a few gusts of hearty
laughter there is a rottenness some
place in its structure which should
be exposed. Tho criticism of jeers
and laughter is criticism of the lethi
ferous kind, but an institution which
cannot stand against it, .rests on
foundations which are shaky indeed
The R. 0. T. C. was not, of course,
really protected by the action of the
Dean. What really resulted was a
deal of advertising unpleasant for
the university because it branded it
as an institution in which ideas are
outlawed, and pleasant for the maga
sine because it indicates that it was
intelligent enough to bring down
the wrath of the administrative offi
rials.
Indeed, far from protecting the R.
O. T. C, the Deun has placed it in
disadvantageous position. He has
made it appear to be so thin-skinned
that at the first sign of laughter it
must turn to supression as the only
sure means of preserving its exist
ence. Those who are intelligently in
terested in the welfare of the R. O
T. C. will not thank the Dean for
that
He has done more than fores the
R. O. T. C. into this uncomfortable
position, he has made the college
comic magazine a martyr ,to the
cause, of freedom of opinion. If he
had ignored Henrietta, The Beanpot
would have passed unnoticed. As af-
fftirs new stnnd the two issues which
were created by the magazine one
an issue of freedom of the press, the
other, an, anti-R. 0. T. C. issue have
0 TMtfyed national publicity.
If the Dean is really convinced
.that tt anti-R. 0. T. G. movement
.ha ae aterit, it Would, perhaps, have
bH fertunate had he remembered
Bernard Sfcaw's remark to the effect
tint "martyrdom is the only way a

BRUTALITY
Tho time Is approaching for tho
annual Iron Sphinx initiation. While
ho subject of class honorary socie
ties is up for discussion It would not
bo amiss to give this initiation its
due.
It is generally recognized that
this initiation, with tho possible ex
ception of tho probation weeks of
somo of tho Greek lottor fraternities
is ono of tho most brutal affairs on
tho campus. Thoso who havo been
through tho initiation declare that
its roputntion for brutality is richly
desorved. Not only tho nctlvo but
tho alumni members, as well, assist
in beating tho candidates chosen for
membership. There havo been times
whon tho victims of tho ceremony
havo boon compelled to recolvo medi
cal nttontion as n result of their
treatment.
Far this sort of thing thcro is no
possiblo excuse. There may bo some
romnrkablo twist to tho sophomore
mind which makes it seem admira
ble. To most persons, however, the
pcctaclo of so much brutality is so
empty a cnuse, is damnable. Tho of-
fenso becomes greater when it is re
membered that tho only duty of tho
Sphinx, as an organization, is to ter
rorize tho freshmen into submitting
tb tho green cap idea. When it ndds
to this sin, this annual indulgence in
animnl cruelty, sensible persons won
der why it continues to exist. If tho
vanity of its members prevents its
disbanding, it might at least put an
end to its infamous initiation. As it
stands a relic of the barbaric, cave
man stage of undergraduate life
it is a shame and a disgrace to the
campus of a modern university.
