Board of Regents Has Surplus in J") a mmm rund Ireasury to Loan Students The Student Loan Fund, which was organized ten years ago, is for the purpose of helping students, who are financially low, through school. It has been used extensively since its organization, and all of the money has been placed in the hands of the Board of Regents. A considerable number of loans have been made this year, but enough money remains in the treasury to make several more. As is the custom, an amount will be left in the fund until the end of the year, so that seniors who run short at the last minute, may finish school. The fund was originated ten years ago at the time of the dedication of the Mechanical Engineering building. It was then thought that the fund would be for the benefit of Mechani cal Engineering students only, but the ruling was changed. The first donation was made by J. R. Web'ter, of Omaha, who gave $1,000 He was followed by y dona tions of like amounts from Hon. W. G. Whitmore of Valley, and Dr. J. A. L. Waddcll of Kansas City. A short time later, Mrs. A. E. Carter gave $500 as a memorial to her husband, a Spanish-American war veteran, and a graduate of the University of Ne braska. The largest single donation ever made was by the J. F. Stevens Memorial committee as a memorial to the late Dr. Stevens. The amount was $1,300. Other donations since the start of the fund have been made by an alumnus of the Engineering College and Sigma Tau, an honorary engin eering fraternity. A donation was received recently by the latter. The first board of trustees for the fund was composed of G. R. Chat- burn as chairman, Dr. Bessey and J. S. Dales. Professor Chatburn still remains as chairman of the board, but the remainder is composed of R. E. Cochran and L. E. Gunderson. Loans will not be made to fresh men, and only in exceptional cases will they exceed one hundred dollars a semester. The character and hab its of the student shall be taken into consideration, and the loan will be made only for his absolute needs. The ocrson borrowing the money must sign a note, and must furnish secur ity in the form of an endorser or ac ceptable collateral. RRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY A squaw wrestling match and a race between men with feet over eleven inches in length and those with shorter, feet were features of the stag party held recently. After a lunch of doughnuts and cider the long-foots defeated the short-foots in a hard-fought basketball game which ended the evening's entertaniment. KANSAS STATE AGRICULTUR AL COLLEGIA "Is he in love or ,is he married!" and "Is he romantic or The College Press OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF MEN. In the more or less cultured body of students at the University of Min nesota, there should be no need to give notice to so crude a practice, so boorih a practice, so primit've a practice as the excessive use of pro fanity. Unfortunately, however, there are those among us who by lack of cul ture, by lack of training, or because of general indifference, are still ad dicted to the mule-driving habit. On the campus streets, in the postoffice, in the halls of buildings, in the class room itself wherever there is as sembled a group of men there can be heard offending phrases. If the men who persist in swearing ! would gather and swear among them selves, even have swearing contests to decide which among them are the most fluent and lengthy speakers, thev would at least disturb no one, and might even derive as much pleas ure from the sport as their feeble type of mind can experience. When they sfoll along at will, though, sick en:ng the air and all their hearers many of whom are women with their brutish talk, they automatically become public nuisances, and should he ousted from public, activities as are all other nuisances. The majority of these who swear do so because they think they are ad hering to the time-honored idea that the college man, to be typical, must incorporate a certain amount of vile talk in h;s every conversation These are to be pitied; pitied and eradi cated Those who swear out of ig norance of the repulsiveness of the hab't should be given intelligence tests to discover if they are really canab'e of doing university work, and if the results are positive, they should jbe forced to take a course in orien ' tation which will stress type forms of Ithe common garden variety of man ners In both cases, measures should be taken to suppress the degenerate i tendencies of the offenders, or to rid UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA One pack of cigarettes per day and no cocoa-colas after three o'clock in the morning are the severe training rules that have been imposed on the members of the Topics and Reel foot ball teams preceding their annual game. To qualify for either of these teams, the would-be player must be a member of the staff of the publica tion he wishes to support.
