WRESTLERS LOOK
FOR RECORD YEAR
Score of Candidates for 1924
Squad; Predict Victori
ous Season.
NOT YET CERTAIN OF
NORTHWESTERN MEET
Take a squint into the Armory any
afternoon and you will see Coach
Clapp rounding a score of native
sons into Nebraska's 1924 wrestling
squad. Prospects have continued to
rise following each workout during
the past few days until it looks as
though the varsity may even outdo
the enviable record established by
University grapplers last season.
Tryouts for the squad will be held
starting the latter part of this week
and from then on only the outstand
ing padded-carpet performers will
be specially tutored.
A dark cloud recently floated over
the Husker camp when it became
known that final contracts from
Northwestern have not yet been re
ceived and the scheduled meet is but
three weeks distant. The local men
tor, however, blames the delay on the
"happy New Year" rush and feels
confident that Nebraska will pry off
the lid of the minor sport at North
western January 26.
To Elect New Captain.
Due to the fact that Trautman the
captain elected to pilot the wrestlers
this season, failed to return to school,
a new captain will be chosen follow
ing the try-outs next week. But
three letter men are back in school,
Kellogg, Thomas, and Whaley. The
latter two artists made numerals two
seasons ago. (
Nebraska has arranged one of the
toughest slates for the coming season
in the history of the indoor game at
this institution. Oklahoma A. & M.,
and the Kansas Aggies are still angl
ing for open dates on the Scarlet and
Cream calendar. Following the ten-;
tative Northwestern meeting the mat
artists will show their wares at Law
rence against the K. U. crew and also
at Ames before the season on home
grounds. Iowa state and Minnesota
twist in the Armory February 8 and
15 respectively.
Lightweight Competition Close).
Assistant Mentor Reed pronounces
Whaley, Thomas, and Kellogg as
finds in the wrestling game at Ne
braska in their own divisions. Uhler
has been showing class in the 1S5
pound group with Mooberry, Skinner
and Brown close for 145 pound hon
ors. Thomas, E. Skinner, Haghly,
Lundy, Fowler, Berquist, and Hamsa
appear to be the cream among the
heavier men.
Plans are being made to send a
team to the Western Intercollegiate
meet at Chicago in February as well
as the Valley title meet at Ames ear
lier in the short month. Should the
season run in the channel that is be
ing made, Nebraska will be among
the best in the country in the wrestl
ing sport.

Football Ushers to
Receive Tickets
Those men who ushered at the
football games this fall are to get
season tickets to other games this
year, according to a statement made
last night. They may get these tick
ets by going to the student activities
office in the Armory.
The first call for spring track was
issued last night by Coach Schulte.
The men are getting out late this
year, with the first meet only a little
more than a month off, February 15,
with the Kansas City Athletic Club
in Kansas City.
All track men are to report under
the east side of the stadium from S
until 6 tonight. The space under this
stand is not quite finished but pro
visions will be made for all events.
The grounds under the east stand
will be completed by the end of this
week and at that time all events but
the javelin and the discus throw can
be held in it. The space will include
a one-seventh mile track, a ninety-
jyard straightaway for hurdles and
and sprints, and spaces for the high-
jump, broad-jump, shot-put, and pole
vault. The pole vaulters are making
their own poles with a new improved
method.
