'"'J ; . , ' . . ' f ; THE DAILY NEBRASKA ' g. CAPTAIN VERNE LEWELLEN Lew is an extraordinarily good backfield man. He runs the ends, bucks the line, passes and consist ently outpunts all his opponents. He has made a wonderful leader this year. His first two years on the squad were spent at the halfback position but this year Coach Dawson shifted him to his old high school station at quarter. His brainy gen eralship and execution of plays have featured in every game. Especially did Lew shine in the Missouri game when although he was injured he went into the game in the middle of the quarter snagged a pass and ran sixty-five yards for Nebraska's only touchdown. 5 This is Lew's last year on the squad and his .place will be a hard one to fill. His home is in Lincoln where he played on the Lincoln high base ball, basketball, and football teams four years. Lew has made two letters in baseball at the University. He is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. M BLOYCE PACKER Pack U a guard. His size is a handicap but he has plenty of fight and his knowledge of the game is an asset to the team. Pack's home is in Lincoln, where he played with Lincoln High. He is a member of Delta Tau Delta. W EMIL HENDRICJCSON Emil is a big heavy powerful line man, and his fight u always evident. He is a valuable lineman both on defense and offense and his ability to hold hi side of the line has made many an opposing quarterback ekiingd ') flas fiom trying to nuke a hole through Hen. 7e is playing his first year an"! next year he should make a berth on the regulars. Emil's home is at Shickley. DAVE NOBLE Big Dave is playing his last game today as a wearer of Husker mole skins. Dave is one of the fastest men on the squad and his speed coupled with his hard-hitting ability is always responsible for good gains. Two years ago Dave was given a halfback berth on Walter Ekersoll's second AU-American team. This year it was big Dave that hit the Notre Dame line for twenty-four yards and a touchdown in the first quarter and in the second half grabbed a pass out of the air and, with a Notre Dame halfback hanging on, dragged over the line for the Husker's second touchdown. He is one of the great est halfbacks ever turned out at Nebraska, He has also been a mem ber of the Husker track team for two years as participant in the 100 and 2 20 yard dashes. Dave comes from Omaha where he played with Omaha central team. He is a mem ber of Phi Kappa Psi. m W DOUGLAS MEYERS Doug started the year at the right wing position but injuries have kept him out of most of the games. On the defense he is very skillful at dumping enemy interference and in the games in which he participated he was on the receiving end of many forward passes. In the Oklahoma game he recovered a fumble and ran ninety-five yards for a touchdown. Previous to this year Doug has played fullback, and it is thought by some that he may get a whirl at lugging the ball at the enemy lines next year. Doug is fast and heavy and when once started he is a hard man to hold. He was formerly a star athlete at Beatrice High school, where he played football, baseball and basketball. Doug is a member of Delta Tau Delta. HUSKER TEAM IS TALK OF SEASON Hat Record of Three Victories, Two Ties, And Two Defeats SURPRISE FANS BY TROUNCING. Herb has a wey of hitting the line and squirming through places that seem impossible. His punt re turning ability has brought many a spectator to his feet in admiration of his broken-field running. Herb's specialty is smashing the line. He can always be counted on for a gain. In the Ames game Herb was injured and forced from practice for a week but the day of the Syracuse game he was out in uniform and played the game of his life. This is Herb's last year on the squad and the coaching staff will have to search far and wide to get a man to deliver as Herb has. He comes from Stanton where he played high school football. He is a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. 1j ROLAND LOCKE "Gippe" Locke, running quite true to hopes, proved to the football world that he was one of the men who can be counted upon to uphold the Cornhusker supremacy. This is his first year on the varsity and his work in every game indicated that he will be one of the leading back field men in the Valley next year. His speed and broken field running gave him the nickname that he bears. Locke was injured in the Ames game and was unable to get into the Syra cuse game. His home is at North Platte and he is a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Kansas Aggies. The season has been a very peculiar one, but one to which Nebraskans will look back upon and boast about nevertheless. The season has not been at suc cessful as some have been before it, but this year's Cornhuskers can at least say that they surprised the whole footbal world. When the Ne braska squad handed its defeat to Notre Dame after being beaten by Illinois and tied by Kansas and Mis souri, they set the country to talk ing. The season was started with an out-state game with Illinois. Al though the team was defeated, the game helped to show Coach Fred Dawson and the members of the team just where the defects were, and where the changes would have to be made. Coach H. F. Schulte, in a statement made aftr the game, ex pressed the purpose and the outcome of the game very well when he said, "Nebraska is a fifty per cent strong er team after the Illinois game." Nebraska was out-played through- 8 LADDIMER HUBKA Hub played fullback on the fresh man team two years ago and showed the same punch at the line his Brother Ernie used to exhibit. Last year on the varsity the coaches ad vised that he change to a wing po sition, which he did and played it successfully, but he didn't get in quite enough games to get his letter. This year Hub was shifted to a guard position, where he has played a part of almost every game. He is light for a guard but he has the ability and the knowledge of the game and he plays his position like a two hun dred pounder. Hub will no doubt be filling a guard berth regularly next year. He comes from Virginia, Nebr. He is a member of Delta Tau Delta. out the game. The hne was inex perienced and out-weighed, and the backfield was weak on the defense. Although the Cornhusker line came back stronger in the last half, the Illinois squad was too much for them, and the final score was 24 to 1. The Illinois score was boosted by two critical fumbles. Grange, Illi nois halfback, was the star of the game, returning a punt for sixty-five yards and a touchdown. Lewellen's punting and running was another feature of the game. The second game of the season was with Oklahoma in Nebraska's new Memorial stadium. Nebraska easily defeated the Sooners with the score of 24 to 0. The game was one of thrills and spectacular plays, with ac tion all of the time. Captain Verne Lewellen was out of the game with h bad in and Pave NoMe acted as captain. The first quarter was featured by line hitting by Acting Captain Dave Noble and Herb Dewitz, but both teams failed to score. In the second 1 5 CECIL HARTMAN Ced is one of the hardest-hitting line smashers in the valley. He runs low and hits hard and it is always necessary to have at least two men in front of him to stop him. His ability at backing up the line on the defense is remarkable and he is a clever interference runner. Ced smashed the Notre Dame line for gain after gain, and he likewise tore up the Syracuse wall. Ced is another member of the Husker backfield quartette that is to be graduated this year. He is fast and when once started it takes good tackling to stop him. In the iSyracuse game he smashed through the center of the line and cut a swath for twelve yards, leaving Syracuse tacklers strewn upon the ground. Ced has been handicapped this season with an injured ankle which kept him out of most of the games. - His home is in Lincoln where he played fullback on the Lincoln high team for four years. He is a member of Delta Up-silon. HENRY BASSETT Heinie was shifted from a guard to a tackle this year and it has shown that he is a star at either place. His main delight is breaking through and throwing them in their tracks before they even get the play started. His aggressiveness and natural ability as a linesman has made him a very valu able asset to the team. He is equally effective both on defense as well as offense as he always keeps the play in his opponent's territory. He is big and powerful and is a difficult man to contend with once he gets warmed up. One of his main pas times in making holes for the Husker backs to hit. This is Heinie's last year. He comes from Falls City high school where he was an all-star tackle. He is a member of Alpha Tau Omega. 1 (V ft ELBERT BLOODGOOD Al is a half back of no mean re pute. He isn't very heavy but his speed and trickiness more than bal ances his lack of weight. Al is one of the fastest performers on the squad. His end running and kicking have been features in many games this year. Al is a second Pete Pres ton in returning pants, he can catch them whfn he is traveling at top speed and when he gets one tucked safely under his arm it means about thirty yards. Al is also a good booter. He can dropkick from the forty-five yard line with ease. This is his first year on the squad and he will make a regular halfback next year.
