Many of them are very old and val uable. An annual aprpopriation from the board of regents of ?35,000 is used for the up-keep of the books now in the library and the purchase of new books and periodicals. Many o fthe books purchased to aid instruc tors in their work must be secured abroad. Other valuable sets are purchased at auction in America. For this purpose there are agents in Lon don, Paris, New York and Chicago. One of the best collections of books dealing with the French Revo lution is in the possession of the University of Nebraska, due to the activities of Dr. Fling of the history department. Under the supervision of Dr. Alexander of the philosophy department, a fine collection of books dealing with North American Indian mythology has been secured One of the greatest needs of the University is additional library space according to the librarian. The read inc room has a seating capacity of less than 2 00 and will accommodate the number of students who need to use reference books. Because of lack of space for bookshelves, many small branches of the library have been started in various buildings on the campus. Library hall, in which the library is contained, was built in 187. At that time there were about 1500 stu dents in the school. University Library Has More Than 175,000 Volumes $35,000 Expended Yearly on Up-keep of Books. America has the finest library sys tem in the world, and the older li braries in urope are rapidly adopting the American method of cataloging books, M. G. Wyer, librarian of the University of Nebraska, told the freshman lecture students of the College of Arts and Sciences, Mon day afternoon and Tuesday morning in Social Science auditorium. The subject of his lecture was "The Li brary." Through the use of the card cata log system, library records are kept up-to-date, allowing expansion of , files as new books are added. Cards I bearing the name of the author and the subject dealt with are inserted in ; the card catalog, which is arranged alphabetically, when a new book is recorded. In recent years the library sys tem of filing has been adopted and modified to suit the needs of the business world, resulting in the loose "That New Dance Orchestra You've Been Hearing About!" - - - The "Nebraskans With Orville Andrews, popular singer . and entertainer "For That Party" Subscription Book.
