Squad Reduced to Forty-five
Men Seventy Out at
Start of Year.
The freshmen had the hard end
of practice yesterday. For more
than an hour they were used on de
fensive, while the varsity tried out
their newest combinations in forward
passing. There were only five regu
lar first team men on the freshman
squad. This made it an easy after
noon for the varsity who completed
passes readily.
The squad has been weeded down
to forty-five men as compared to the
seventy or more that started the sea
son. Most of the men who dropped
cut were light. Some of the fellows
had difficulty in arranging their
schedules for afternoon practice and
had to quit for that reason.
The practices thus far have devel
oped several men of outstanding
ability. Weir at left guard is a
worry to any opposing man on the
varsity, and he has brought down
words of praise from the varsity
coaches. He is only of medium
weight but in this one position here
a man with a lot of fight is needed,
he fits to a "T." The Manderey
toothers, Roy at right end, and
Avard in the backfield have been
showing first team form from the
beginning of the season. They are
good at the receiving end of a for
ward pass, and Avard in the back
field is a ground gainer of no mean
ability.
The freshman have a quarterback
in Bill Bronson who can size up the
opposing team, and who has done
some pretty passing work. He and
Manderey make a pair which is sure
of connecting over half the passes
they attempt.
Some heavy men on the line in
clude Jones, right guard, who tops
the scales at 195, Bass right tackle
190, Gray 200. If a line were
picked on the basis of weight alone,
the freshman could have one aver
aging over 190 pounds to the man.
Freshman Coach Farley Young is
making changes in lineup almost
every day, and it is likely that the
first team at the end of the season
will be quite different from that at
present. Right now in the scrim
mages the second team shows up
fullv as well as the first team, and
men are swapped from one team to
the other frequently.
All girls desiring to go to the foot
ball game on Saturday with someone

Freshmen to Use Kansas Play
in Daily Scrimmages
with Var$ity.
With the Kansas rime but four

The Javhawks are nreriarinfi' for
the annual battle with the Cornhusk-
ers with renewed seal. Conch Potsy
Clark says his team is in the best
shape it has been all season and they
are coming up here to give Nebraska
a real battle. He says his team
hasn't had a chance to show its
strength this year because both pre
vious games have been played in the
mud. He has some trick plays up
his sleeve that he is planning on try
ing against the Scarlet and Cream.
He said, "a dry field will help ma
terially, because we can open up and
try our real strength."
