Start Campaign Against Student
Automobiles at Michigan School
A press dispatch from Ann Arbor
contains the following:
"Parents and guardians of Univer
sity of Michigan students genernlly
are sympathetic with the recommen
dation of university authorities that
student automobiles should bo kept
at home but protests are henrd often
on the campus. President Marion L.
Burton has received letters frpm par
ents commending the university's
stand. Many are from parents whose
children have no automobiles on
the campus, but mnny are from par
ents whose . children have their own
cars in Ann Arbor. A circular let
ter from the president's office ar
rived in many homes at a time when
there was some question whether to
provide a car, and the letter in
stantly solved the question. Up to
date but one letter has been re
ceived at the office of the president
which opposes the attitude assumed
by the university. It came from
the head of one of the big motor car
companies in Detroit."
University of Nebraska officials'
have many times discussed the de
sirability of a similar circular let
ter, but in every case decided that
the temper of our people is such that
advice like the above might be re
garded as unwarranted interference
in private matters.
In commenting on the dispatch
Chancellor Avery remarked, "Inas
much as Ann Arbor is in that sec
tion of Michigan where more than
half of the automobiles of the world
are built, President Burton seems to
be willing to attempt to beard the
lion in his den. He is a man of
great personal influence and can put
this reform over if any colleges pres
ident .can. We are awaiting the re
sult of his efforts with much
terest."
Receive University
Community Friday
Chancellor and Mrs. Avery will
entertain at an informal reception
on Friday evening, October 5,

Smith hall for all members of the
faculty, other employees and of
ficials, student pastors, and all
associated with the life 'of the
University community. The invi
tation includes members of the
families of University people. It
is hoped that a large number will
improve this opportunity of be
coming better acquainted.
