Saturday the University of Nebras ka will meet the greatest collegiate track team in America. Last year, California won the big eastern inter collegiate meet, and later came back to win the national intercollegiate meet in' Chicago. The weather-hampered, young (in point of training) Nebraskans will meet the greatest competition in the country. Incident ally, they will meet 'one of the most sportsmanlike teams in the country. In actual competition, California may be superior; in sportsmanship Bhe cannot be. Witness the tale of sportsmanship and loyalty of one of Nebraska's track men who didn't go. A third-year man, a splendid stu dent, and ex-service man, who bears the marks of that service in lungs which still suffer from gas a man whose parents live in Berkeley had set his heart on making this trip. The cold weather, In combination with his lungs, which need careful attention, hampered development. Three separate times, however, he forced himself for tryouts and each time fell just a little short. Then he found he could not make the team. It may not be generally known that in order to make the trip pos sible, each man, who made the team, had to put into the common chest some of his own money in order to cover expenses. Sixteen, of the iwpntv men who went, work their way through school, in part or com t)letely. The man-who-couldn't-make it knew that some of the men would have difficulty in raising the money, and he quietly approached the coach with this information. "Say, some of the fellows will have trouble in raising money for the trip won't they? I've been figuring, and in a pinch, I could stake two of them maybe three." The coach, seeing the fineness back of this offer, asked, "How much in terest on this money?" "Oh, I hadn't thought of that; but I would want no interest well, any how, not until June first; after that they could pay interest. I don't be lieve it would be hard for them to pay back the principal by that time." The man-who-couldn't-make-it didn't go; but he is there by proxy. Cal ifornia may outrun or outjump us; hut Jthev can't beat the man-who- couldn't-make-the-team. Palladian Society. Palladlan open meeting and pro gram Friday evening, 8:30, Talladian hall. Cake Eater -model of 1900 He was called dude and dandy then, but you recognize the type. He majored in haberdashery and took his degree with honors in soxology. As if that were not enough, he evolved some variations on the cake walk which madethem stare. He even found time to develop a remarkable proficiency on the tandem bicycle, and on Saturday nights he was good enough to bring pleasure into Another's life by wheeling away to the "Ten-Twent-Thirt." To crowd all this into four short years would seem enough for any mortal. Yet in spite of his attain ments there are times, in after life, when our hero wonders. The glory of his waistcoats has long since faded", while his books are still fresh and clean. Did he perchance put too much thought into the selec tion of his hats and-too little in what went under them?
