Prof. E. V. Floyd, of the physics
department, of Kansas State Agricul
tural School, otters a course for next
semester in the "physics of music."
Tills course is of special interest to
students in the music courses, al
though those in the public speaking
department will also find it of no
small value. The course is an en
tirely new one in this country, and
even the old world has done little
investigation along this line.
"Its purpose is mainly to bIiow t he
why of things," said Prof. Floyd.
It has taken him years to outline
his work, for there was hut one text
book from which he could gain my
background, a Gorman work written
by Holmholz a man who is snld to
know physics, mathematics, music
and everything. "He was a bit too
much of a mathematician for the mu.
siclans of today," said Prof. Floyd.
And so Professor Floyd has made
brass tubes, flutelike in length; he
has made brass Imitations of the
clarinet, made flasks without necks
and necks for flasks. He has made
a violin that is not a violin. Ho hns
even made the producer of the hu
man voice. The vocal bands are
there. The "Adam's Apple" is ther.
The colection is an unusual one.
And Professor Floyd is keenly alive
to the new subject. Kansas State
