cadets of the H. O. T. C. regiment
vie with each other for honors in the
annual competitive drill on Nebraska
lield.
Competitive driil was tirst started
here soon after the-University was
lounded and long before the local unit
was under direct supervision of the
v. ar department. It has grown from
a small exhibition of several squads
to the well-drilled and efficient per
iormance of an entire regiment of
khaki-clad men. The gro,vth of the
cadet regiment has kept pace with
the rapid development of other phases
cf University life and the exhibition
this afternoon promises to be the best
of the long series of similar reviews
here at Nebraska.
One of the interesting parts of
"compet" is the annual shirt-tail
parade which is held on the evening
of the big event and is lead by the
company winning in the inter-company
competition. The parade this
evening is to start and end up at the
A.mcry and will be followed by a big
iMinfire on the drill field.. The plans
arc complete and speial efforts are
iting math- to prevent the repetition
of any untoward incidents rn the

will take leave of their men ut this
time and the companies will break
ranks for the summer.
The program for this year's "Com
pel" has been carefully worked out
by the officers in charge and the time
scheduled has been so arrr.nged that
allowing for all possible delays it will
be over for the afternoon at 5 p. m
This will be made possible by over
lapping the events and carrying on
company drill, inspection and indi
vidual drill for the companies simul
taneously. Finale of tbe Year
But the grr.nd and hilarious finale
of the military year will start nt 7
p. in. this evening, when the men will
assemble in front of Nebraska Hall
to form for the annual Company "Q,"
or shirt-tail parade through streets
of the business section of Lincoln.
Every man is expected to attend in
appropriate costume nnd prizes in the
form of treats are offered by the
cadet officers for the most striking
get-ups." The parade is handled by
the Cadet Officers Club and is tradi
tionally headed by the winner of the
individual compel and by the winning
company, it furnishes a happy let
down from the afternoon of rigid dis
cipline that the men have gone
through. The parade follows a pre
viously determined line of march and
the men are received by the business
places through which they pass in
a tonlial manner.
Brinks and smokes are usually pro
vided by the diug stores and candy
shops visited. The men are bound to
respect the property of the id. ices
which they visit and all harmless hi
laiity will be unchecked. The parade
will end in front of Nebraska Hall
where it began, un'.ess otherwise
specified and the traditional bonfire
will he lighted on the parade ground,
around which a "pep" session will he
held. Toe tired and happy bunch will
s: y their final good byes here at the
close of another school year for the
department. The memories which one
carries away in m these gatherings
are invaluable in alter years and sor
ry is the man who leaves the univer
sity without having attended at least
one "shirt-tail parade." He ha; lost
his part in one of Nebraska's most
cherished traditions.
