You have heard it argued many
times pro and con the co-Urn l ion
that an oucation is not gleaned from
books and studies alon. We agree
most heartily that an education, at
least our idea ol" one. cannot be ob
tained merely from scholastic elfort3.
There are many other activities thr.t
play a part in education tha are
not developed in the class room.
But there is a difference between
educational activities and time wasN
ing diversions. Heporting on 'he col
lege paper cannot be compared to
attending the Orpheum matine. Th's
is the illusion that a great many slu
dents seem to have. The student
who neglects his studies to attend a
movie on a mid-week night cannot fall
back on the theory thai an edm.atioa
does not come from books alone.
In this connection, here is an ex
tract from a communication written
by a student to a university official:
"I have often wondered if you, in
condemning us individually for un
prepared lessons and poor grades,
have stopped to think of the cause for
the same. We come, thousands of us
from all over this and other states,
from good homes where we have hod
the influence and restriction of got d
parents; otherwise we never would
have been here. We come to the city
turned absolutely loupe, with money
to spend we have never been 'aught
the value of, away from the heme in
fluences which made us what we arc,
and on account of the .argniss of
the institution unable W get the per
sonal touch we so much need.
"We have been taught at home thai
It was disgraceful to be caught in a
pool hall; here we find it is a pel
fectly respectable way to spend your
money because you leain to play iu
aa Y. M. C. A. Then as we sen our
Daily Nebraskan. we see the dance
and the movie advertisements which
are so attractively worded and place!
that many times an evening vhich
had really been planned for study Is
spent in one or the other of these
places."
We must say that we do not agree
with everything just as it is stateJ
in this anonymous letter, but wc want
to state that is the strict policy of the
Nebraskan not to run mid-week dance
advertisements, although ?cmn qc-cas
ionally slip through due to oversisht
or carelessness.
In this tirade we have ramblM far
from the subject, but what we want
to put across is this: your studies
come first, then helpful activities. ar,d
amusements last.
Contemporary Opinion
BAD CHECKS.
What is all this going on aboit bad
and worthless checks written b stu
dents in the university?
Can the practice be checked and
those giulty of carelessness and fraud
be taught common sense and honesty?
We hope so. First of all each ctudeat
writing checks should carry a check
book, number each check drawn and
make an entry of the amount of check
and carry the balance to his credit 'n
the bank, forward on the check stub.
Doing business by "guess" is a shift
less and inexcusable method and
when it comes to handling your bank
account, the person who follows the
"guess" method will sooner or later
get in bad. The dean of men is doing
great service to those students who
ha. been careless In the past in hand
ling their checking account find in
weeding out those atteuding the nni
rersity who are dishonest enough to
write checks on banks in which tbey
hare never had a cheering account.
There is no excuse for permitting
a checking account to be overdrawn.
The remedy for this evil is to make
out checks from a check Btub and keep
close tab on the balance to your cred
it in the bank. Every man and woman
attending the university should roal
lze the Importance of this, h' their
parents at home have not taught thcra
along these lines it is up to the stu
dent to now realize they must gain
this information hero in the univer
sity.
Accept this suggestion from a for
mer student now in the business
world. Obtaining money or goods un
der false pretenses is a serlou criinr.
Live within your allowance and in
come and adjust yourself to the habit
of saving and thrift. You cannot
start this plan too early in life.

The Exhaust.
When you've staked
Out a claim,
Got it going
Good,
And someone
Just swipes it
Oturight,
ci get sore
At them then,
And it's not
Quite Square.
They ought
To treat you
White.
When you've started
A thing,
And it gets
By well,
And someone
Jds: uses it,
Say.
They're stealing
Your thunder,
Just helping
Themselves.
Don't even
Ask "If
I may."
In the Exhaust
They write,
The same
As I,
And they don't
Even get
An excuse.
"Didja"
Their style, ,
Inane,
Insane,
And then
They go
And use

Well! Aint it?
Oh! My!
