LI COLLEGE TO
ABOLISH
PENALTY
Vote Was Taken At General Lecture
Prominent Lincoln Attorney
Gives Barristers Advice.
Before introducing tho speaker at
general lecture Friday morning, Dean
Seiiyey brought the proposed abolish
ment of penalties for missing cuass
Writ of penalties for missing class
the law college. Tho vote of each
class was unanimous for the plan.
This was taken by the Dean to mean
that every student would do his or
her best to uphold the attendance rec
ord. He has always looked on the pen-,
alty method as infantile, and was
glad to gain the support of the stu
dents in abolishing it.
The regular Friday morning lecture
was delivered by Walter Anderson, a '
prominent Lincoln attorney, and ex
speaker of the Nebraska house of rep
resentatives. His admonitions to the J
future members of the bar were; to
avoid procrastination, to cultivate a j
good memory, especially for namas j
and faces, and to enter politics. His j
advice was as follows: "Do not put j
your work off until tomorrow, or next j
Sunday morning, or next spring. You I
will be as busy day after tomorrow j
as you are today. Always some unex- j
pected work will arise to take up the I
short period, which you have looked i

forward to as the time when the many
matters postponed would be done."
"Anothor thing absolutely necessary
to a successful lawyer Is a good mem
ory. Cultivate it. Not merely a faculty
for remembering phrases and facts
from the books you study, but the
broad principles Involved. Also, and
this Is very Important, remember
names and faces of those you meet,
Man is a vain animal. If you remem
ber his name, and speak to him he
will bo very favorably impressed. In
this way you can cultivate an extern
ive acquaintanceship. I used to advise
young members of the bar to keep
out of politics, but I now consider it
a duty for every one trained along
this line to take an active part in the
work of government. It is not neces
sary to run for office, but use your in
fluence at least. There is going to be
a revolution. It may be one of force,
or It may be a gradual peaceful change.
Which ever it is we must play our
part. Many parts of our constitutions
are incorporated therein by logrolling,
and have no good reason, other than
this for being there. These things
should be changed, and this change
will be one phase of the revolution,
which is sure to come. Every lawyer
should understand the workings of the
legislature, and to gain this informa
tion lie should serve in that body at
least for one term."
Mr. Anderson was pleased to note
the number of girls preparing to be
leaders In a political way. He said
there should be uo woman's party, or
branch of women in any of the exist
ing parties, because tho governmental
interests of men and women .are the
same, and with proper leaders they
can co-operate.
