The lighting effects are pleasing even to the well-trained "movie' 'eye. MALE AND FEMALE Artcraft-Paramount Cecil H, De Mille has attained an other milestone in his career in Urn production of this diflicult piece of work woven into the title of "Male and Female." The story is of mon strous scope and deals with the prob lems which have confronted all ages, and are especially dominant in our lives today. In this sliver-screen pre sentation Mr. De Mjlle makes of little Hebe Daniels, once "lead" in Harold Lloyd comedies something more than a "slap-stick" artist. She is the fin ished product of a masterful stroke, and emerges a dramatist. Gloria Svanson and Thomas Meighan do ex cellent work. The play was adapted from the famous story, "The Admir able Crichton." EYES OF YOUTH Clara Kimball Young Productions 9 Clara Kimball Young, the screen's most vibrant and responsive personal ity, appears this week at the Lyric in her own production "Eyes of Youth." This play has been known as the thunderbolt of dramatic force. An all star cast of especial note plays in sup port of Mis Young.' The screen play is not so thrilling, and throbbing as the famous stage version with Mar jorle Rambeau, but acting worthy of the keenest commendation is evi denced by the slightest motion on the part of the actors. If the screen had more plays so full of correct technical ities and natural settings, it would t;:ke a mighty leap forward. Hut this i. only one of the many plays pleas ing to the optics for the month of January. With belts and pulleys replaced by electric motors operating automatic almost human -machines, many a slow and tedious pre cess has been elimi nated. The factory workers task o! yesterday is mace pleasant by his command of this magic power. The Crane Company's plant at Chicago-electrical through-out-is a model of industrial efficiency. Its 10,000 horse power of driving energy is brought by three small wires horn a distant power plant. Then electricity drives the machinery which handles the coal for heating, cuts the steel, sifts the sand and sorts the material-in fact docs everytn.ng from scrubbing the floor to winding the clock. Such an institution is marvelous superhuman-made thus by the man-multiplying force of electricity. The General Electric Company has been instrumental in effer'ing thia evolution. First, by developing successful electric gener ating and transmission apparatus to furnish economicaiijr this modern form of power. Secondly, through many years of active co-operation with hundreds of manufacturers, ic has mastered the art of applying the use of electrical energy to a multitude of needs.
