OHIO ENCOURAGES SONGS TO BOOST SCHOOL SPIRIT (Continued from Pijrp One) quainted with the campus and the city enough to prefer other things. There are many things freshmen should be told about the University the first week, and the daily gatherings are a splendid idea. Concerning a Kansan's Opinion of Dr. Minakuchi's Address Editor Daily Kansan: Again we have the platform speaker "who persists in offering as proofs of a premise arguments which could not be supported in debate. Some time ago D. Minakuchi, speaking before the convocation made statement after statement which was either untrue or presented in a false light. "Japan has no fear of a break between the United States and Japan," he said, and later "America is Japan's greatest creditor, as well as her greatest customer." And this is advanced as a reason why Japan and the United States will never engage in a war! Both of these argu ments are exacty the same as the ones offered by Germans in England, and even by misguided Englishmen, in 1912-13, and the earlier part of 1914 to show the impossibility of war between Germany and England. Dr. Minakuchi further stated that Japan had never violated international obligations, attributing her Chinese and Korean policies to "mistakes of the past." This, considering the con tinued aggressions against these coun tries in the past eight years, and the recent annexation of Korea, with the overthrow of an established, independ ent government, is ludicrous. The Speakers arguments with refer- ' ence to the Philippines were equally unconvincing. First, with reference to the tropical location, the fact that no great nation has ever come from a tropical climate, is irrelevant in as much as Japan would only desire the islands as a colony, as is he case with the United States and certainly their location has not caused this country to cease, to be a great one! Again, it is well known that the mongolian race is the only one which has in the past been able to exist in any climate they are found from the poles to the equa tor. The economic argument is also fallacious, for although the islands have cost this country a great deal in the past, they have now been educated nearly, if not quite, to the point of self-support. And finally, the gentle man's agreement between Japan and the United States is certainly of no morn value than "the scraps of paper" of Germany, particularly in view of the recent treaties between Japan and China which have been so ruthlessly broken by the former. The "Yellow journalism" plea was obviously a more or less innocent at tempt to discredit the officially verified reports of the acquisition of Mexican Laid by Japanese citizens. Considerfng these facts, embracing the denial of nearly every portion of Dr. Minakuchi's speech, it will cer tainly be wise, to use one partion of his own expressions. "Chew the ma terial well before you swallow it," lest jx-a should "have a bad case of ind gesiion." "H.C.N."
