THE DAILY N ERRASKAN' CORtlllUSKERS MAKE MIGHTY BID FOR MISSOURI VALLEY PENNANT ft Maintain Position Near the Top of List Until Near Fag End of Basketball Season. May Land in Second Place If Vic torious Over Grinnell Today and Saturday. By Oswald B. Black. Jumping lnt the Missouri valley race with a gang of seasoned veter ans from last year and ripping things up quito generally at the start, the Nebraska Cornhusker basketball team battled for the conference title thru twelve strenuous games and were vithin three games of the end of the peason before It hit the toboggan at Manhattan at the hands of the cham pion Kansas Aggies Just a week ago. The Jayhawk farmers had breezed thru their entire schedule of nine games with nary a hint of defeat, and the Cornhuskers were caught in the draft and flattened out with the other victims. They were on deck with a possible chance of snatching the gob let from the Aggies up until their de feat at Manhattan, but now they will have to be content with second, third, or even fourth place, according to the outcome of the two Grinnell' games this week. Divide Pre-Season Games. Doc Stewart's proteges took on the Omaha Balloon school and Camp Dodge quintets in four practice games prior to their opening vvalley number and they had no trouble in disposing of tfte Calloonists both times by 24 to 5 and 22 to 11 scores. The Dodg ers were of a superior caliber, how ever, and the soldiers marched home with both games to their credit, win ning the first by a score of 25 to 18 and the second, which was a terrific tussle, resulting 25 to 24 for the in vaders. Opening Game to Huskers. The regular Missouri valley season opened with a swing thru Iowa terri tory, including two games with Drake and two with Grinnell, the baby mem ber of the conference. January 22, the Huskers opened with a victory over the Drake Bulldogs by a score of 34 to 13. The Iowans were outplayed in all departments of the game and Btood no chance of winning. The following day, Nebraska took on the Grinnell basketeers, who had just recently been admitted to the val ley conference, and trimmed them by a save margin of 24 to 14. Brilliant passing on the part of Jackson and Gillilan accounted for the victory. The Grinnell youngsters came back in, the second game with a surprising burst of speed and turned the tables on the Huskers, winning by a score of 16 to 15. Such a setback was not the most encouraging thing that could have happened to the Huskers bo early in hte race, but the following day they again met the Drake Bull dogs and won handily 24 to 14. The following week Drake Invaded Lincoln and succeeded In winning the first game by a six point margin, but losing the second to Nebraska 10 points in the rear. Drake Opens Season Here. Drake followed the Nebraska boys home and helped usher in the home season on January 30. The Bulldogs took the Huskers by surprise and grabbed the first encounter by a mar gin of 6 points, but lost the return number 10 points in the rear. A big effort was made to resusci tate the fast dying Nebraska spirit at the Washington-Nebraska games the following week and with the help of over a hundred legislators the gym was stuffed to the cobwebs with howling supporters. The Huskers took both games from the Missourians, the first 35 to 25 and the second 28 to 13. Two hard fought games against the Missouri Tigers on February 14 and 15 resulted in a double victory for Nebraska. She climbed from third to second place in the standings and shoved the conference leaders down to third. The score of the first game was 28 to 26 and the second was 21 to 14. Ames refused to play in the Ne braska gymnasium and the games set for February 21 and 22 were can celled. The Huskers took a lay-off until they invaded the Kansas coun try on March 5 for two games with the Jayhawkers and two with the Kansas Aggies. Cornhuskekr hopes of a valley championship began to fade when the Jayhawks took the first game 31 to 17, but revived somewhat then they handed the second to Nebraska by a 29 to 24 score. Said hopes bumped into oblivion when the Kansas farm ers took the last two numbers 34 to 32 and the second 30 to 21. The games today and tomorrow with Grin nell decide whether the Huskers can jump back to second place or slip to the bottom. fif 11 if II II SATURDAY NITE ROSEVILDE DA COME AND HEAR THE BEST MUSIC IN LINCOLN GAYLES 1 USICAL ERRY AKERS $1.25 Your Basket Ball Team SOCIAL CALENDAR March 14.
