GERMAN GESELLIGE VEREIN DISBANDS (Continued from page one) iwim nf our organization, would take a hostile attitude toward the Univer sity for allowing us to continue our meetings even though such prejudices jr.; :-Iliv. i . . .-.( ': 'z: O ' . were from our point of view entirely unfounded. But since, contrary to our expecta tions, our inotlvei have been mis judged, and misconstrued and wo our selves have been falsely charged with being disloyal to our flag even by our f cllo a Biudelits, wv do not hesitate to abandon our organization. Wo thould never have continued our club thus far, In fart, had we known that any considerable student opinion wax that we should disband. It has been my purpohe. and I think the purpose of all of us, to work hand In hand with the other organizations and groups of the student body In promoting the best Interests of the school and of tho gov ernment, and we are very glad t.i yield to that sentiment as expressed In the recent Issues of The Nebraskan. Would Not Be Tainted But 1 would ask, and I think my request is but reasonable, that the unfounded charges and Inferences of our disloyalty and pro Germanism be rescinded for I think our fellow stu dents have wronged us grossly In en deavoring to taint us as such for we wish to be recognized as that which we truly are, namely, pure Americans in every sense of the word Joined by common ties with all our countrymen who have now and will continue to have the best interests of America at heart." The member when interviewed seemed anxious to emphasize the fart that although he thought that the club had been grossly misjudged still the Gesellige Verein was perfectly will ing under the circumstances to dis band in accord with the sentiment as expressed In the Nebraskan. The Deutsche Gesellige Verein has been long organized in the University and was previous to the war recog nized as being composed of students proficient in the German language. Many of Its members were of German parentage although a large number were not. Frofessors Fossler, Alex ander. Alexis and Thiel, Dean Hcppner and others were patrons of the club. Its meetings were social in character and its programs consisted of musical numbers, lectures and other forms of entertainment. All properties of the organization will be left at the students activities office and the club itself will be sus pended for the period of the war at least. Inspires People to Patriotism Hon. Josephus Daniels, Secretary of the Navy, sat beside Captain Mof fett in the reviewing stand on Fifth avenue and as the band passed he ap peared dazed. The secretary declared that the Great Lakes band truly is the greatest body of musicians ever sscmblcd. Requests poured into tne Navy Department from all over the East everyone, it seemed, wished to receive the band. A tour was ar ranged. Philadelphia was visited. The good people of the city of brotherly love were thrilled and dazed and they marveled at the Jackie band. Balti more wept when the young sailormen swept through their city and raised twenty millions of dollars for the Lib erty Loan In a single night. Every important official In Washington gave his aid when the band reacnea tne caDitoL President Wilson declared that "the band is the greatest demon stration of American spirit that it is Dossible to conceived and certainly ts the greatest band in the world." And Lincoln is not going to he sur passed by the Eastern cities in her reception to her Navy boys. Sousa and his band will be granted every opportunity to thrill the people of this city. MINNESOTA MEET PRESENTS PROBLEM (Continued on page three) crowd out to cheer . the Cornhusker athletes on to victory. In case the meet should go to that place, the high school would take care of the ticket selling, together with the Commercial club and practically every business man of the town. Must Have Consent of Conference There is one thing, however, that still stands in the way of the transfer, and that Is the fact that In order to effect It; Nebraska must get the con sent of the Missouri Valley confer ence. Coach Stewart is In communi cation with the Missouri Valley authori ties new and should have an answer within a very few days. So that all of these plans are yet In a tentative state. However, It is hoped that iomt satisfactory solution of the problem will be found as it is anything I at desirable to have to cancel the ree' altogether.
