THE COLLEGE WORLD
The University of Wisconsin has
been mz'r.s an a!! university food
Pledge campaign. A committee com
posed of two captains, twenty lleuten-
a
au( ami 2u0 private who have ier-
sonally Interviewed every student In
the university and have asked them
to pledge themselves to the conserva
tion of food. This action wbh taken
as a result of the charge of the state
council of defense that the 6tudents
through ignorance or otherwise have
not been co-operating as heanlly as
they might In the nation wide conser
vation movement.
In order to iave fuel the University
of Wisconsin has cloned both !', gym
nasiums, and all thote taking paysk-a
education are skating, skiing nd
tobogganing for their credit. Addi
tional rinks 'and skiing slides are be
ing built. It is expected that this
plan which the fuel situation has
forced upon the university will prove
beneficial, and that it will give a new
impetus to outdoor sports.

MAKING OF AN AIRMAN
His Status, Salary, Medical Exam
ination All the details of the status of an
airman in the making have never been
fully told in sequence. Let us, there
fore, follow a young man who has de
cided he will endeavor to qualify for
the air service. First, of course, comes
the routine of application.
The lowest age at which applicants
may be accented is 18 years and 8
months, on the theory that at the end
of their training they will have
reached the age of 19. which is the
lowest aee at which commissions may
be granted In the American army.
Applicants under 19. however, must
present letters of approval of their in-
listment from their parents or
the military and naval establishments
miardian. as is required throughout
of the country. All applicants may en
list at any aviation examining noara.
if an annlicant1 Massed his twenty-
first birthday before June 5, 1917, and
is consequently subject to the drart, a
eneHni arraneement has been made
whereby the rule prohibiting . volun
tary enlistment by draft men Is waived
and he is nermitted to enlist' directly
at an aviation examining board with
out reference to the draft or his drart
hnorH All that is attended to ror
him by the aviation authorities.
v.ve.n It he is in the present quota, ne
mav be so enlisted, but if he has been
actually ordered into service by the
draft board, he must report to nis
mobilization camp as ordered,, ana
there apply to his company com
mander for transfer to the air service.
Tho r-nndidate's first step Is to write
to, or visit personally, one of the
twenty-four aviation examining Doaruu
innate in the larger cities, or tne
Recruiting Bureau, AviaUon Section,
Washington, D. C, to secure an appli
cation blank for entering the service.
The candidate fills this out as indi
cated, with details of his life and his
athletic and educational qualifications,
in order to provide both a first esH
mate of his desirability and as com
plete a record as possible in case of
his acceptance.
Than mm ph his Dhvslcal examina
tion. Naturally this must be strict
fnr th eood of both the service ana
the applicant. Also it appears for
midable to those wno ao not unaer
BtanA it. an formidable indeed that
the following explanation is given to
rob it of its mysteries.
nf course the usual tests oi lung
and heart are given, for no man can
be accepted who Is not strong enougn
withBiund the nressure of high alti
tude. The stethescope, the tapping of
the chest, and the broad ruDDer Dana
hmit the arm are familiar enough in
testing lungs and blood pressure.
When the candidate is set to picn.
i Aitroroni colored napers out' of a
box he may be a little mystified. Let
him remember, however, tnai cuiur
blindness would be a source of weak
ness to one upon whose preciseness
of vlBion depend the lives and fortune?
of men below. It is
often a slight change of color, a sug
gestion of a deeper brown, mat nrat
reveals the new cut- trench to the
ever-watchful eye in the sky.
But it is the balance test which
causes the most perplexity, largely
,..,.,. it iii not understood. Test-
Ing balance is a new science, and a
complicated one requiring ingenious
methods. But It is of vital importance
to him who later may oe uawmmus
.. niml miles above the ground
,,, in r alone at twice- express-
train speed in a solid bank of clouds.
One's balance Is reguiaiea en-ireiy

inner ear. It is as delicate, and as
accurate as th fluid in me nnesu

MERCEDES ORPHEUM TODAY
Mercedes, whose mystical, musical
thought transference act Is reminis
cent of that of Professor Lovett- and
his Concentration or vice verse gets
over wonderfully. At the demand of
any member of his audience, Mercedes
thoughfully makes his assistant at the
piano. Mile Stantone, play the selec
tion asked. If the little speech Mer
cedes made near the close of his act
regarding a certain national hymn
"not Russian, nor Italian, nor French,
nor English, nor American." was the
flare-up from an insult it was a great
patriotic exhibition; If It was a regu
lation part of the act1. It was more
than clever. Denver Express. Adv.
