The state commerce nnd welfare commis sion is now billing oiu; complete copies of the report on the food conference held in Omaha, May 22 to 25. Conscription Takes Students. Ef fects of conscription have" already begun to make themselves felt in the University. A number of students are being compelled to leave school to fill the places left by some one taken in the draft. Four such cases have been recently reported In the engineering college. Mable Stern. 20, returned Wednes day to her home at Grand Island. She has accepted a government posi tion in the food conservation de partment. Mildred Shirley, '20, spent the end of last week at her home in Hum boldt. Mrs. M. J. Moseman will visit her daughter. Vernie, at the Achoth house Saturday and Sunday. Genevieve Bechter, '20, and Quen dolyn Drayton. '19, will spend the latter part of the week in Omaha. The girls who spoke at Vespers Tuesday evening went to Cotner Wednesday to talk in the Y. W. C. A. there about the Geneva con ference. Nell Ryan, from Omaha, visited Ruth Hutton the latter part of last week. Marguerite Smith, '21. will spend Saturday and Sunday in Omaha. P. Wambeam of the extension de partment, left Saturday with the drafted men. He was editor of farm news for several different papers. D. L. Gross, '19, a farm house man has left school to take up work at Still Wate, Okla. He is doing field work with fungus growths, chiefly smuts. Universiyt Commercial Club A meeting of the University com mercial club will be held at 7 o'clock Thursday evening in the Lincoln Commercial club rooms. The object of the meeting is to inaugurate the new membership campaign. All members of the school of commerce who are interested are invited to attend. Union Literary Society Union Literary society holds ita regular weekly meeting at 8:15 o'clock Friday evening in Union hall, Temple. A cordial invitation is extended to all. Tegner Society The Tegner society will meet Sat urday evening at 8 o'clock in Art hall, second floor of the library build ing. Palladian Literary Society Palladian Literary society will hold a meeting at 12:30 o'clock today to decide date and -place of next closed meeting. ALUMNI NEWS Miss Eunice Munson, '17, Is visit ing in Lincoln this week. She will leave for Southern California soon. Cloy S. Hobson, '16, is playing football with the all-college team of the United States marine training station. Mare Island, Calif. "The team has won from the University of California twice, with a score of 26-0 and 27-0," writes Guy Fowle, '17, who Is at the same training sta tion. Miss Florence McGahey, the regi strar, will return In a week from Fort Snelling, where she is the guest of her sister, Mrs. Charles Morse. Miss Faith Swigert of Illinois Is visiting her sister, Mrs. Tilden Hos kins, of Lincoln. Harold Neff. '17. of Omaha Is In the work of national land classifica tion in Colorado and Wyoming. Vance Traphagen has a position with the Journal this year. A. O. Johnson, former efficiency agent of the University, is on the purchasing staff of the headquar ters company at Camp Funston, Kan., with the rank of first sergeant. Abi Beynor, '17. is head of the commercial department in the St. Joseph high school this year. Hugo Flynn. '19, in Lincoln .last week-end, is with the Burroughs Ad ding Machine company. Burke Taylor of Lincoln Is at Fort Riley. He and his wife passed through Lincoln when he was on his way to Fort Riley. BRIEF BITS OF NEWS Returns From Iowa. C. A. Ful mer. graduate fellow in education, has returned from Iowa where he has been lecturing before county in stitutes the past week. Prof. Howard in NorthwestProL R. F. Howard returned October 7 from a trip to Scotts Bluff, Kimball. School of Agriculture Registration in the School of agri culture will be held October 12 and 13 at the state farm. Classes will begin Monday. Junior Class Meeting The meeting of the Junior class called for Thursday morning has been postponed until Tuesday morning on account of the football rally. JEAN NELSON, President. Catholic Students' Initiation The Catholic Students' club will hold its annual initiaton of new mem bers. Frday evening, October 12 at the Robbers' caves. 'Meet at 10th and O streets at 7:15 o'clock. Student Assistants' Club The first meeting of the Student Assistants' club will be .held in Faculty hall. Thursday evening, Oc tober 11 at 8 o'clock. All students in all colleges who are assistants are in vited to attend. Unversity Facuty Women A meeting of the University faculty women will be held Friday evening, October 12. 1917, at the Scottsh Rite temple, 15th and L streets. Every one is expected to bring yarn, knit ting needles or a crochet hook and 15 cents. The committee in charge are Misses Anderson. Grant, Mun son. Nelson and Odell. Football Ushers All football ushers will report at the athletic field Saturday at 1:45 o'clock. Students who have not been assigned and who wish to usher should call at the Awgwan office be tween 3 and 5 o'clock any afternoon. XI Delta XI Delta, the honorary sophomore girls' society, will meet Thursday eve ning at 7 o'clock at the Alpha Phi house. Important, D. G. V. Queen, whose family is one of the best and oldest in Scandanavia, will be the house guest of Pi Beta Phi during this winter. A most In timate friend of Miss Angelette Barnes of Holdrege, she has made her home n that town for the past year. Upon Miss Barnes hearing that Miss Queen was coming to the University this semes'er the chapter immediately sent a formal, special de livery letter asking her "to be one of us." Owing to her credits and a few other irregularities Miss Queen replied that she could not become a member of this chapter this semester but that she would like to "become better acquainted with the girls." She was met by the active girls at '.he train and colors were pinned on her Immediately.
