DEAN HEPPNER GIVES TEA
FOR CO-EDS AND FACULTY
Four Wives of Deans of the Arts and
Science College
Assist
The first of a series of teas for the
University girls and faculty was given
by Dean Amanda Heppner in Art hall
Thursday afternoon from 6 o'clock.
Nearly five hundred girls were pres
ent.
The wives of deans of the arts and
science college, Mrs. C. C. Engberg,
Mrs. Charles Fordyce, Mrs. L. A. Sher
man, and Mrs. Samuel Avery poured
tea, and Alice Temple, Jane Kingery,
Katharine Newbranch, Carolyn Reed,
and Eleanor Bennett served. Mem
bers of the Girls' club board assisted.
The teas will be given weekly un
til after the Thanksgiving vacation.
Dean Heppner believes that they will
afford enjoyable opportunities for the
freshman and upperclass girls to be
come acquainted and she hopes that
even more girls will attend the next
meeting.
SAILORS RECEIVE COURSE
OF TRAINING IN PHARMACY
Columbia Turns Department Over to
U. S. Navy During Summer
Months
The college of pharmacy of Colum
bia university was turned over to the
United States Navy this summer and
was utilized for the instruction of en
listed men in all branches of work
which would fit them tor first aid and
hospital service among their ship
mates. Three hundred young easterners,
all bearing the rank of hospital ap
prentice second class and enlisted for
four years made up the student body
of this emergency college, organized
to safeguard and protect the health
of Unicle Sam's favorite sons.. Classes
started Tuesday. July 10. and contin
ued until Saturday. September 22, ap
proximately two and one-nan monw .
of intensive study, rharmacy, ma-1
medica. sanitation, hygiene,
anatomy, first aid, and the various
other subjects embraced in regular
hospital corps work were taught by
Dr. Stamm and bis assistants.
According to Dr. Stamm. tbe men
are to be assigned to the battleships,
cruisers, and destroyers of tbe U. S.
X and will soon be widely separated,
