TWO AMATEURS WHO RETAIN THEIR STATUS.
The recent action of the United States National Lawn Tennis association
D voting down the proposed rule which would have shorn McLoughlin, John
ton and others of th,elr amateur status, appears to have been timely. Xatur
tlly, the more rabid reformers were unpleasantly surprised, but the couserva
ive thinkers connected with tenuis are confident that the move was a wise
me.
Think what a loss to the net game the absence of Its brightest stars from
.atlonal and lntersectlonal tournaments would be. At best such tournaments
lave only been enjoying success In a large way for the past three or four
fears, and all because of the brilliant performers who have been entered,
rennls owes much to these stars, and It would look like near-sighted policy
o legislate against their standing as clean-cut sportsmen who play the game
.'or the love of the game itself, rather than for any financial benefit they de
lve from It.
Capitalization of athletic fame. If carried to an extreme, is not good for
iny amateur sport, but the action of many stars in entering the sporting goods
leld is not to be criticized too severely.

Froth Won't Fight
Action taken last week by fresh
men and sophomores of Washington
university seems virtually to have
abolished the annual class rush be
tween the two lower classes. The
freshmen adopted a resolution in
which they refused to participate In
the fight, and the sophomores voted
to protest the enactment of the Slu
dent Council establishing the combat.
They also passed a motion which
Ftated that they were opposed to any
fond of Interclass competition in
which the risk of physical injury was
'primary and skill and ability were
' secondary elemvnts. Ex.
I The faculty has recently made new
' rules as to the time when the dances
of the University shall stop. Instead
of the regular dances having to stop
at 4:30, they ntust now stop at 2:30
a. in An exception to this rule is at
Commencement time, when the dances
must stop at 4:30 a. m. Instead of at
6 a. m., as it has been previous to
this time. Of course, this time de
pends on the. conduct of the dances
but as the University authorities have
had very' Uttle trouble in this respect
it Is not expected to interfere with
the hours. Dut the Student Council
has urged that this good fooling be
tween the faculty and the students be
continued. Ex.

curiously beautiful timbre, that exotic
charm of tonal quality which has
made these instruments so sensation

The Ukulele has a pleasing grace of
form. The finer models are made
of genuine Hawaiian Koa wood. It
is much in request today among the
