SAVE COLLEGE YOUTHS
Guard Boys Against Profession

Dean Brlggs of Harvard Says Ath
letes May Be Protected in Gram
mar Schools Cheering Is
Termed as Good Thing.
College boys can lie saved from pro
fessionalism in the grammar schools, Is
the idea expressed by Dean Le Baron
It. Brlggs of Harvard, chairman of the
athletic committee of the college, In his
warning Issued to prospective college
athletes against playing for money, In
an address on athletics at Harvard.
He said :
"The ethics of athletics should be
like the ethics of anything else. If a
boy breaks his amateur standing, he
should be quick to say so and face the
music. I think that any normal Ameri
can boy will play name of baseball
wherever and whenever he has the
chance. Often they get into semi
professional company, and without car
ing much about the stipend they re
ceive, accept money for their services.
Few boys reullze what may be the fu
ture effects of receiving pay for play
ing baseball.
"As a rule, a boy will keep secret
the fact that he has earned money for
ball playing. But sometimes it may be
years In the future the fact is likely
to come to the surface at a time when
the boy would give mnny times the
original amount if he could only blot
out his one slip into professionalism.
"The seriousness of playing for
money should be shown to the boy
when he Is still in the grammar or high
schools. Oftentimes they have mar
red their amateur records before they
even think of coming to college. If
advice of this kind is impressed upon
the boys early enough, the danger of
their being declared professionals and
ineligibles Inter in college life would
very likely be obviated.
"There are sonic phases of baseball,
practically accepted as Institutions of
the game, that are decidedly unsports
manlike. Iiattllng the pitcher Is one of
these. The incessant talking of the
players is another phase that Is hardly
necessary. The talk does not encour
age. "Cheering is a good thing. It Is or
ganized and under the control of the
cheer leaders. But even this Institu
tion can be misused, as It is in football
games, when the cheers may make It
Impossible for the opposing quarter
back to make himself heard."

The old Turk, All 151, may butt la on

Square and flat bats were at one
time used In baseball, but the sphere
has always been round.
Les Darcy, the Australian middle
weight, would rather smell tobacco
smoke than gunpowder.
Maybe the ball players who talk
about a strike would like to get under
the eight-hours-a-day law.
Someone with a few extra Jitneys
should pay the Baltimore Feds that
$900,000 and stop the fussing.
At the baseball meetings frequently
other limits are raised than those re
