SONNETS OF A PESSIMIST
VII. Of Languages.
When on Olympus all the nightly gods
Took solemn council of the state of
man.
To raise him from the beast that
weary plods
The circle of existence, how to fan
In him a nobler fire, and how to
link
Him to their higher race, they chose
the plan
To give him power of progress, power
to think.
Of man. ennobled, all endeavors ran
To reach a higher stature and to
walk
With mightier beings; so by day and
night.
His wordless prayers besieged the
halls of light
The wearied gods then gave him pow
er to talk.
Ala, the years have shown his choice
the worst.
The second gift makes him forget the
first
VIII. Of Science
The realm of Science, in whose dark
ened ways
Man has been prone to wander a!!
his days.
Lies yet in checkered patterns, where
the light
Intensifies the blackness, and betrays
Only a portioned secret as to "How"
And shrouds the "Why" in sullen, un-
plerced night
And still mankind Is happy to ex
plore. Set up new guldeposts where, long
years before.
