Do not stop with talking; work con
structively with your neighbors to
straighten the tangled web of Interna
tional jealousy and suspicion and
fear.
I should be untrue to the central
teaching of Carlyle if I did not remind
you that it is action which brings
the only solution of the mysteries and
contradictions of the human spectacle.
Seen objectively, whether by philoso
pher, satrist or saint, the world of
man is, indeed, in Newman's words,
"a vision to . dizzy and appal." But
very few of us have either the mental
power or the moral detachment tnus
to hold the worid off at arm's length
and look at it. Tigmies though we
are, we must take our own part in
it; and just as the complicated move
ments of a dance may seem bewilder
ing to those who are watching it, but
simple to the dancers, so meditation
upon the liie of man may drive a sen
sitive person into poetry or insanity,
while your day's work and mine may
be plain enough.
We find our job, ordinarily, by work
ing at it, and we simplify it as we go
along. We have first to pull our
selves together into physical and men
tal coherence, and then to pull all to
gether like a good crew. I remember
a stroke invented by the captain of
a Vale crew in the eighties, who
thought he could improve upon the
famous method taught by Captain
"Bob" Cook. When pulled on the
rowing machine in the Yale gymnas
ium, the stroke was a marvel, but at
the finish of the race at New London,
Yale was several lengths in the rear,
in cvmnnthisinz with a Yale man aft-
j i j
erward I hazarded the opinion that
the trouble was with the new stroke.
"No," he replied with angry loyalty,
"it's a good stroke; of course, we
don't feel quite certain yet how It
works in a boat, on the water."
Your chosen university has taught
you something of discipline, of rev
erence for established institutions, of
insight into the intricate web of hu
man affairs. For all its guidance to
ward a coherent mastery of life, you
should be grateful. And if your uni
versity has "unsettled" your provin
cial views, jolted you out of the ruts
of complaceny, given you startling
material for thought, pointed out new
and far distant goals for yourselves
and for mankind, you should be grate
ful for this also. The fabric of life
should be full and rich and honestly
woven. If an artificial symmetry of
pattern has been gained by exclud-
what realiy belongs in life's texture.
it will all have to be unravelled and
the threads painfully woven together
again. Coherence is the law of life.
With bodily tissues momently break
ing down and as momently renewed,
with minds daily distracted, but also
daily concentrated upon some task,
with spiritual energies forever wither
ing but forever Refreshed from the
deep springs, the generations go forth
to their work and to their labor until
the evening. Here and there in the
endless procession you will se a man
rich in intellectual Interests and
abounding In practical service who
has so ordered his activities that he
has a right to say with proud simpli
city; "This one thing I do." That
man Is to be. envied, for he has found
th secret of the coherent life.
One by one they gradually succumb.
Rumor has it that another of last
year's Black Masques will soon an
nounce her engagement. Thus do the
arts of war prevail even in times of
peace, and sponsor and Cupid work
side by side.
