FRATERNITIES AND SCHOLARSHIP The statistics given in today's Ne braskan show that there is great room for improvement in the matter of the scholarship of fraternities. The con trast between the record of the fra ternities and that of the sororities is decidedly to the advantage, of the lat ter. It is also rumored that many of this yeara fraternity pledges have "been forced to withdraw because they did not make the required number of Tiours. It is easy to see a causal re lationship between these two situa tions. . We believe that the low scholastic standing of fraternities is due to two main reasons; fraternities are too hasty in pledging men, and they do not exercise the proper supervision after pledging. A good high school record, or in deed a good appearance at first meet ing are sufficient to get many fresh men the coveted fraternity bid. Lit tle care is taken to determine wheth er the prospective member has the staying qualities that "make him desir able. Then when he is once pledged, little care is taken to see that he is following the lines he expected to fol low when he entered the university. Until these two features of frater nity life are properly emphasized, such organizations will always be open to severe criticism. It is to be hoped that sophomore pledging, which is to go into effect next year, will do much to remedy this condition. THE GALLERY AGAIN It is hoped that the business man agement of the junior play will see fit not to open the gallery for to night's performance. There fs a cer tain amount of stage-fright that every amateur, has to overcome. This has never been successfully done when the actor feels that at any time ho may be greeted by some silly re mark from the patrons of the third floor. The gallery's annotations and interlbpations are entirely out of place on such an occasion. L08t A flat black pocketbook. Re turn to Nebraskan office.
