INTERESTING INDIAN WORK
NOW ON EXHIBITION
Girls of today with their refined
tastes and social advantages are often
prone to think their Indian sisters
coarse barbarians without apprecia
tion of anything fine or beautiful.
Remnants of the decorative work
done by them is, however, evidence
to the contrary. In the State Histor
ical society museum are many arti
cles made by them, which show ex
quisite care. Their beaded bags and
swinging cradles are especially in
teresting. They are made of leather
on which designs are traced in col
ored glass beads, the gift of the first
white settlers. The fringe, purely In
dian, is made of thongs wound with
moist porcupine quills of various
colors. About a dozen were knotted
together to make the "strip long
enough and all the eitds securely hid
den. The women as well as the men were
very fond of using fragrant herbs as
perfumes, but they were never known
to choose any but the most delicate
ones.
Paul Orchard of South Omaha and
Richard Bryson of Fullerton are vis
itors this week at the Pht Gamma
Delta house.
A. A. Reed, high Bchool inspector,
has been out of the office for a few
days on account of an attack of ton-sllltls.
Mahan Not to Help Coach Cal.
Contrary to repeated rumors, Ma
han of Harvard is not signed up to
help coach California's football team.
Manager Stroud stated that he had
approached Mahan upon .the subject,
but had done nothing definite and
California was not considering such
an appointment.
