    THE WOMEN'S PAGE
The Woman's Point of View
A WOMAN'S BUILDING
The thlrfg that Nebraska women
need above all others, Is a woman's
building, built with gymnasium, swim
ming pool, a hall for general partleB,
offices for girls' activities, rest rooms
In short, a building to meet the
everyday needs of the girls in the
university.
If women do not have healthy out
door exercise, they become weak In
body and mind. For a healthy body
creates a healthy mind. At Nebraska,
there should be better locker rooms
and dressing rooms in connection with
a girls' gymnasium. There should be
a separate swimming pool, there
should be tennis courts for girls, rooms
for girls' club meetings and for mixed
parties.
In the past, the general masculine
attitude has been antagonistic towards
girls' sports, but the marked good will
and enthusiasm at the basketball tour
nament Saturday, shows the change In
sentiment and the possession of good
will Is the biggest step in overcoming
a difficulty.
If Nebraska women want the wom
an's building, better athletic and social
opportunities, they should show their
interest and not hesitate to express
themselves.

HISTORY OF GIRLS'
BASKETBALL AT U. OF N.
Since 1896, basketball at the Uni
versity of Nebraska has been an or
ganized sport for girls. Mrs. R. Q.
Clapp, then Miss Ann Barr, and Miss
Louise Pound coached the first team,
and for twelve years match games
were played with big schools, Y. W,
C. A.'s and normal schools in the vi
cinity of Lincoln, and with Haskell
Institute, Missouri, Kansas and Min
nesota universities. During this time
only one game was lost and that on
a new dancing floor at the University
of Minnesota.
Much interest and splendid support
by the whole student body and people
of the city was given the girls as
long as the varsity team existed. Uni
fied interest and pride was felt in
skill and enterprise of the girl ath-j
letes. A movement started by the
deans of women of several univer
sities caused Intercollegiate contests
for women to be prohibited.
After the varsity team was abolish
ed, and even long before, basketball
was so attractive to the girls that in
order to accommodate the members
wishing to play, class teams were or
ganized. Now interest of all the girls
in the university is centered about
the annual class tournament. , Oppor
tunity to learn basketball is offered
by the Physical Training department
to every girl in school. It is from
this material . that the most skilful
players and those chosen to represent
their class In the tournament.
"THEN AND NOW" AT
Y. W. C. A. VESPERS
"Pioneer Celebration" Is the broad
subject of the program at Y. W. C. A.
vesper service today at 5 o'clock. This
program had been scheduled for Feb
ruary, the Jubilee month. The par
ticular topic at this time Is "Then and
Now" by the "old and the new." Those
taking part are: Mrs. W. G. Warner,
who was in the university when the
association was established here ; Mrs.
J. E. Almy, who knows about the ac
tivities a little later; and Dr. Winifred
Hyde, who knows how things have
changed. In this way, the great de
velopment of the Y. W. C. A. at Ne
braska will be told.
HARBINGERS OF SPRING
Do spring hats come with the robins
or do they migrate a little before
the robins get here? We might ex
plain that the way spring hats mi
grate is to come from cold attlcB or
dark closets out Into the balmy spring
sunshine to grace the head of some
rair co ed and trick people into think
ing it is new that is if she brushed
it hard enough and was clever at re
modeling. The only way for the Inexperienced
observer to be sure it is new is to be
sure It is leather. If the girl who
rushes the season wants something
really chic and new next year, she
will probably have to have a hat
whittled out of wood or carved out
of stone as the supply of materials
is not extensive enough to have a new
one for each succeeding year. How
ever, leather seems to be the proper
thing at present. It is rumored that
old shoes will soon be In great demand.
