MOTHER'S DAY
"Youth fades; love droops; the leaves
of friendship fall;
A mother's secret hope outlives them
all." O. W. Holmes.
If any one group of people should
appreciate the significance of Mother's
Day more than another it is Univer
sity men and women. Surely they
must come to realize sometime during
their college career the sacrifice of
the folks at home, and more particu
larly the sacrifice of mother. It is a
serious moment in the life of a
mother when she sees her boy or girl
start off to college, for they are mov
ing into a new realm and in four years
they are transformed into men and
women with new aims and purposes
in life that usually prevent their re
turning to the old home. And in the
complexity of this new life we are
apt to fail to keep closely in touch
with the home folks. So it is that the
mother sacrifices the companionship
and the service of her boys and girls
because she loves them.
How can we best observe the day
that has been set apart to mothers?
By doing the things that would please
her most. To the mothers who are
living, very likely a good long letter
from her boy or girl down at the
University would give her more pleas
ure than anything. Not a letter tell-
ing how many parties you have been
to or how hard you have been work
ing, but just a good, frank letter of
appreciation, telling her how much
you love her. Two thousand such let
ters sent out to the mothers next Sun
day would be far more vital observ
ance of the day than to merely wear
a carnation and go to church and then
go back to the room and forget all
about the purpose of the day. In
memory of the mothers who have
gone away, perhaps we can best enter
into the spirit of the occasion by
mentally journeying back to other
days and reflecting upon the influence
of mother in our earlier years. Here,
too, we may catch a glimpse of her
hope and ambitions for us that will
be an inspiration to us to be the best
that we can be. Who can fail who
seeks to live up to the expectations
of his mother?
So as University men and women,
let us make the most of this Mother's
