BANANAS RIPENING IN UNI GREENHOUSE Tropical Tree In Full Bloom Shows Remarkable Growth for North ern Climate While the snow is Bwirllng around the corners of the buildings and the thermometer registers 20 degrees be low, a banana tree in the University greenhouse is in full bloom and a large bunch of bananas are fasl ripen ing. The tree is about twelve feet tall. Its leaves are four to six feet long and about three feet wlde, smooth and thick. The blossoms are too large to be pretty, but they are interesting because of their size, each petal of the blossom covers about ten to fifteen of the small green bananas. This is the first bunch of bananas which the tree has yet produced; last year the tree was frosted, and the year before that only a few bananas were ripened. The tree starts from a root each year all the rest dies and for this clime te the tree has made a truly remarkable growth. "you "Oh, Clarence," Bhe sighed, surely have a mortgage on me."
