TUESDAY, JANUARY 5, 1515
Welcome back.
Did you enjoy yourself?
everything up your way?
How is
THE NEW YEAR
The old year is gone and with'it all
that might have been. Some have
drifted as dead branches upon the
Missouri. Others have at least tried
to control their own course in life and
have struggled with various degrees
of success to let thought, not luck or
fate, guide their destiny.
It is an opportune time as we bid
good-bye to the old year and greet the
new to take note of whither we are
traveling. When old Mother Earth
shall have made another score o.
journeys around the sun will we be
listed with the brilliant, the mediocre,
or the failures? A careful self-examination
now may have much to do with
the answer.
Welcome the coming year with
earnestness, courage and a will to rise
above the level of the years past.
TLere is but one hopeless class
those of dull minds and without cour
age, who say: "What's the use?"
Success is not easy or all would
succeed. Resolutions to do this or
that will not get one far. A South
Sea Islander believes that his arrow
will always hit the mark when dipped
In blood. So the one who dreams of
high places, if, he would hit the mark,
must bathe his ambition in his own
life blood. Self-mastery and continual
effort are the secrets of success. The
biography of every student who fails
can be written in these words: "He
loved ease too well."

Nebraska men will shoot in the first
intercollegiate rifle match next Thurs
day at an hour to toe arranged to suit
the convenience of the team members.
There will be a match every week
from now until about the time out
door drill begins.
The rifle team is composed of the
ten best shots in the University regi
ment In every match each man
shoots ten shots standing and ten
prone; the five best scores are then
forwarded to the secretary of the Na
tional Rifle association at Washington,
who announces the comparative stand
ing of the competing teams.
Nearly all of the large colleges in
the United States take part in these
intercollegiate shoots.
Nebraska was not represented last
year through failure to send in a filing
fee on time, but expects to make a
record this year. Major Armstrong
says that Nebraska has some good ma
terial and could show up to advantage
in her class if the men would turn out
for practice.
