Address by Stannard on "Scien
"Scientific Management" was the
subject of a lecture given in convoca
tion yesterday by J. W. Stannard.
The lecture was given under the
auspices of the Engineering College.

work of scientific management of vari
ous business establishments and'
therefore based his talk on the prac
tical side as well as the theoretical
side. He divided the work of an estab
lishment into two parts, the "plan
ning" and the "doing." Then, taking
up each side separately, he showed
how the work should be carried on In
order to bring the best results. Mr.
Stannard declared that scientific man
agement is entirely practical and that
In time all people will realize the Im
portance of It

made by T. E. Wood and waff accepted
by Professor Chatburn, acting for
Dean Stout, who was unable to be

ate work until 1884, when "he received
his A. M. here. He spent. the year
1884-1885 at Yale, and took his Ph. D.
there in 1385. In the fall of 1885 ho
returned here to take up his work as

ing, to which position he had been ap
pointed before ho went to Yale. He
was head of the department of Civil
Engineering until 1893, when he re
signed to accept a professorship of
mathematics at Leland Stanford. He
spent several years there, but finally
returned to engineering as professor
of civil engineering In the University
of Idaho, where he is now dean of the
College of Engineering.
His service here was In the days of
extremely limited facilities. The
amount of strictly technical instruc
tion which could be given was there
fore somewhat limited. It was for
tunate that the work at that time was
in charge of a man who was strong
in tbefundamental ' subjects, so that
in spite of the absence of material
equipment he was able to give stu
dents a foundation, of mathematics
and mechanics which fitted them to
round out their technical work when
