A committee was recently appointed by tho Athletic Board to Investigate the baseball problem at Nebraska. Tho members of this committee are: Coach Stiehm. Prof. O E. Barber and R. C. LinBtrum. This cojnmltteo In their report to the board advises that inter-collegiate baseball be discon tinued They reached this conclusion after a thorough consideration of tho Missouri Valley Conference rules and the present condition of athletics at Nebraska. The following is the report In full: Tho following is tho Missouri Valley Conference rules regarding baseball: 1 Belief in the necessity of the am- ateur rule reaffirmed 2. Agreed to require students to re frnin from nnrtlrlnntlnn In Hummer baseball during their college course except on their own town team where no gate fee In charged 3 Agreed tc reinstate men who are technically ineligible through ignor ance or through the acts of others This practically means that a player WARREN HOWARD Not content with being a star on the Nebraska football team for the past two years, he has now made ills letter as guard on the basketball team. He is fast and aggressive and enjojs the distinction of having made more basketB from his position as guard than havo his forward op ponents must choose between tho University team on tho one hand, or a town, semi professional, or professional team on the other. Frequently he chooses both, feeling that the Conference rule Iq unfair and that he needs the money to continue his education. This makes it necessary for him to lie to the col lege authorities concerning summer participation in baseball. The evi dence regarding players' connection with summer baseball, such as "acting manager," ticket taker, assumed names, secret pay rolls, salaried com mercial positions, padded expense ac counts, valuable gifts, proves to a cer tainly the moral hazard of maintaining college baseball under the present Conference rules. Tho Influence of association with minor league or "buBh" league players is far from good for the college stu dent. Bssssl civo to tho ideals of puro amateurism and collego athlotlcs. Our gymnasium Is not oqulpped with an indoor Hold and Is inadequate for oarly season practice. This handi caps tho playors materially when in competition with other Missouri Val ley teams. Tho length of the- season is limited to about six or sovon wooks, tho Uni versity ruleB prohibit tho Bchodullng of Intor-colleglato ovonts in Lincoln for other than tho two closing days of the wook, frequently wo havo Inclem ont weather this timo of tho year. All of those mako the drafting of a satisfactory schodulo very difficult and prevent the playing of somo gamoB. There is little Btudent and no public Interest in varsity baseball, -duo, to somo extent, to tho proBonco of ,ho Western League club In this city. In this connection it is noteworthy that Drako and Washington Universities do not engage In Inter-collogiato base ball Without attendance the gamo has no value ob a Bpectaclo and the 8at0 receipts are exceedingly limited Tho Athletic Board cannot afford to spend approximately $500 to $1,000 an nually for baseball and tho cost Is entirely out of proportion to the limit ed number of participants. The athletic field and drill ground are located In the same limited slmco The track team, Bprlng football prac tice, Inter-class and inter-fraternity baseball, military drill and the prob ablo introduction of aBBociation (sec cor) football, leave little if any time or room ?or baseball. The llkoly athlete cannot bo a can didate for tho baseball and track team as well. Both would be weakened to a certain extent. The football player who desires to play baseball must neglect his spring football practice We are facing a situation whore tho football captain-elect has been de clared ineligible because of partlcipa tion in Intercollegiate baseball count ing one year of competition It is the recommendation of your committee that inter-colleglate base ball be discontinued under the present ruleB and conditions of the Missouri Valley Conference.
