WE HAVE JUST OPENED "THE EVANS" DRY CLEANING PLANT TELEPHONE UNI COSTS TAXPAYER i i (Continued on Pago Three.) any great diminution in the cost of public education to the taxpayers. Some students may be educated at two years in college; others at three, and still others at four: some stu dents may be educated at twenty, others at twenty-two, and still others at twenty-five, Jlut the fact Is that no mutter how long it takes each par ticular student to equip himself for his life work, Just so long as the state remains in the business of giving edu cation to all who apply for it, Just so long will the expense of maintaining the university be a dully burden upon the tax payer. It must appear obvious to nnyqne who is at all given to a critical examination of the facta that while the length of college course may he a matter of pedugogicul concern, It has no effect whatever on the ulti mate burden sustained by the tax payer. Now what are the facts? What Is the cot of educating each student at the University of Nebraska? Surely the questioner does not Include the cost of university Improvements in his guess at the expense of university education; for the buildings, entirely aside from their educational value, are an asset in the hands of the state. Neither can he include in his error the federal grant, the laboratory feeB, and the cost of keeping up the va rious university special activities, such us the ugriculturul experiment station, the conservation commission, the entomological bureau, the manu facture of hog cholera serum and a half dozen others, all of which aie for the benefit of the industrial peo ple of the state, all of which are con nected with the university only be cause the university is the place hav ing the expertB required to run them, and none of which form a necessary part of the equipment which the tax payers must furnish for the education of university students. So that the tax payer's only burden for the pur pose of higher education is the amount spent for university maintenance, ex clusive of Improvements and exclusive of special activities, a little over 70 cents a day, which is fairly, honestly and legitimately all that the taxpayer can be said to put up each day for the education of each student at the University of Nebraska.
