Tin- game last Saturday with the
Haskell Indians from Lawrence, Kafl ,
lin l-tt an unpleasant taste m the
mouths ot the Cornhusker fans The
contest was an unsatisfactory one
from many standpoints. Now that the
immediate feeling engendered by the
game has cooled off somewhat the
time is opportune for a sane presenta
tlon of the facts.
Indians Are Near-Professionals.
The Indians should not be properh
lassed as collegians nor their teams
as amateur teams. They are bound
b no eligibility rules. The redskin
players shift from Haskell to Carlisle
and irom Carlisle to Haskell The
number ot jears an Indian has played
counts as nothing he is used in the
game as long as he makes good, be
that one, two, four, five or even seven
years
In addition the Indians have noth
ing to do in this world except go to
school at the go ernmeiit's expense
'and pla football It makes no dif
jterence to them il tlie aie disfinuied
oi ( rippled in a game loi then tutun

pin steal shape or his chances in win
ning his waj in the world alter his col
lege das are diminished II he is

( Hence it is that the Indians pla a
more wicked game titan tlieii white
brothers Not caring for liimsell he
Inaturalh cannot understand that the
i white man does care, in fact, must
(are To say thi- does not imply that
the red skin excells his white brother
in coinage For the whites are as
courageous as anj Indian that ever
lned Hut their courage is mixed with
disci etion He must think ol the mor
row while the Indian does not Theie
in lies the difference
Since the Indians are hound b no
eligibilitv rules, play as man cais
as thev make good and pla virtually
at the go ernment's e.xpence they are,
il not professionals, near-protession-als
They should not bo scheduled
foi c ollege games
No Glory in Defeating Redskins.
While a university football team is
loathe to be defeated by the Indians,
at the same time there is no honor
for a university in defeating them.
They are in no conference and play
no regular football schedule, being
merely nomads that play where they
can.
The game Saturday did not help
Nebraska in her race for the Missouri
Valley Championship. On the con
