March 3, 191, The students of the University of Nebraska, protected as they are by a, stretch of territory with a radius of I a thousand miles and thickly populat ed by much interested friends, can scarcely realize the political status of another republic so close at hand Mexico. It Is probable that much of the In terest so lately developed about a par ticular point in that republic, the City of Mexico, seems to you as an event of little consequence, yet, today were you placed In the position in which many of your American friends find themselves, It is certain that the deep est concern would be Immediately evi dent. Much of the news published In the American newspapers Is extremely re stricted In detail, particularly to the horrible, revolting conditions of tho present social turmoil now rending I the populace of this beautiful land. As a student of human nature de- i veloped through the contact with the' various types of rational beings, It can j be said that as a whole the Mexican situation is fast developing among the j illiterate of this land a condition far-'i reaching in it s retrogression. i Today the civil conditions are truly less for good throughout the country I as a whole, than were thirty-five (arsi past. Not that wrong principles have always exit ted. rather the good exist-1 ing have been made Injurious through , the application to personal whims and avarice for pomp peculiar to the La-' tin-American people. j Were you engaged as are we, fast in the core of a fomenting, tossing, de vasting plague of hypocrisy, you would feel that which has been threat ened to be done is but half of that which will be accomplished in time by the revolu'lonary ideas running lam pant from state to state, canton to canton and hacienda to hacienda. To tho students of the University of Nebraska It Is of much consequence that the political conditions In Mex ico, seemingly of so little moment, be given consideration if not careful study LEWIS CARL CHAPMAN, (Jeologist NOTICE.
