Yesterday's convocation was partic
ularly Interesting and instructive,
thanks to Professor Urumann. who
has very w isely arranged to get men
the type of Dr. Edwin I). Mead
Mr. Mead is president of the World
Peace foundation, which was en
dowed with a million dollars a few
years ago by Hdwin Oinn of tJinn &
Co. He was delegate to the Interna
tional Peace congress in 11)08. As!
a publicist, orator and an author, lie
Is ono of the most widely known men
in the east. He was for a number of
years editor of the New England
Magazine, which is a publication of
distinctly literary type and, has been
president of the Twentieth Century
club of Uoston, and of the pioneer
social service clubs. Mr. Mead is at
present devoting all his time to trio
cause of international peace, and
editing of a popular priced library of
works of famous authors on war and
peace.
The title of his address was "Tho
United States as a World Power," and
Its explaintory clause "Washington
the Expander of England." He iiointed
out the fact that Washington and his
able assistants had in fact done tho
best for England of the two nations in
that they had settled the rights and
liberties of Englishmen and taught
England good colonial policy.
He gives Uncle Sam credit for in
spiring Japan and China and having
the unparalleled honesty to turn back
to China what was left of the Hoxer
indemnity fund. "Honesty is the best
Polle," said Dr. Mead, "for China in
turn has invested the money in Amer
ican cultivation of Chinese brains."
Finally In speaking of the Ualkan
situation in the east, in which tho
Turkish tyranny is being forced out
of Europe, he said that it whb Amer
ican ideas that have shaped tho Bul
garian self government and through
it the Turks turned out. He gave
great credit to Roberts American col
lege at Constaniople where the demo
cratic ideas of our country aro
taught.
