Hngenslck's Orchestra Auto It 0 4 2 i A RADICAL STEP BY IOWA BOARD All Engineering to Be Given at Ames Hereafter Arts, Sciences and Do mestic Science at Iowa City A New Ruling. The State Hoard of Education of Iowa has taken a very important Btep, an action which is the most far-reaching of any ever taken by any similar governing body of this country This action is the coordination of the three Htate institutions of learning, viz , the State University at Iowa City, the Iowa State College of Agriculture, and Mechanic Arts at Ames, and the State Teachers' College at Cedar Falls Heretofore the courses given in these respective Institutions have overlapped Domestic science and science has been given at both Iowa and Ames; engi neering has been given at both these Institutions, a course in liberal arts has been offered at Iowa and Cedar Palls This overlapping of courses has caused much trouble in the past, as concentration on certain courses has been impossible owing to the fact that the equipment and facilities have been divided Three large state institutions giving work of a Rimilar nature, but of course differing in some respects, were within a radius of 125 miles It was natural that the same departments in the different schools would not be equally good The Engineering School at Ames was superior to Iowa, the do mestic science course at Iowa was bet ter than that of Ames, and the liberal arts course at Iowa excelled that of Cedar Falls The question then was, Why not combine the courses and thus reduce duplication as between the sev eral schools to the minimum? The board has finally agreed upon the following plan of coordination of the three institutions First, all work in engineering is to be centered at the Agricultural College; second, all coursos in professional education and liberal arts at the Teachers' College, which extend beyond the sophomore year will be discontinued and centered at the Unlversitj , third, all courses in gen eral science and domestic science now existing at the College of Agi iculture will be discontinued and the field of household art will be opened at the University Such a radical step on the part of the Hoard of Education will place Iowa In the front rank of the leading edu cational Institutions or Ihe count ly Mls8ioanry Class Formed.
