DANDELION DAY TRAGEDY. Lazy Students Receive Much Deserved Drenching. The following story has como to UghTTif "connection with Dandelion, day. The reporter has been pledged In regard to the names of the parties concerned, though all are well known In tho university. On Dandelion day, when most of tho students were blistering their hands In an effort to down tho golden-headed pest, this party, in company with nn Everett car, without chains or side curtains, and a prodlgloits nmount of lunch, Journoye'd out to the penitentiary woods to enjoy their holiday. A little before lunch time a storm camo up and they were compelled to fly to the enr, and huddle down on the bottom. Thinking that tho rain would abate, they did not start homo at once, but pulled the robes up over their heads and tried In vain to avoid a drench ing. When they finally started home the road wns almost impassable. One of the boys secured at a near farm house (at a price which ho refuses to admit) some Tojre, und with these makeshift chains contrived to keep tho car In tho road till they reached town about midnight. A NOMENCLATURE WIZARD. German Society Changes Name With out a License. Tho Gornian society met Wednes day In tho banquet room of tho Tem ple, and in tho short business meeting changed Its name to tho "Voreln Ger mania." This Is the third name In the brief history of tho society, tho others being tho "GermanlBtlscho Ges ollschaft" nnd tho "Deutsche Vereln." Tho latter namo was not found accept able because of the similarity to the name of the older organization, the German ' Club (Deutsche Gcselllge Vereln), and accordingly It was changed. Tho society also voted unanimously to have a picnic on tho next regular meeting evening, and to start at 0:15, all definite arrangements to bo made later. Tho committee appointed to tako chnrgo of tho affair consists of Miss Badger and Mr. Huwaldt. After tho business meeting, ono of the young womon members of tho society rendered an excellent piano solo. Finally, hot coffee, German sandwiches nnd pickles were served. Tho attend ance was good. ON UNI. PARADE GROUNDS. May 26 Announced as Date for Annual Company Contests. Tho annual competitive drill will be held on Friday, May 2C. As It Is planned, tho exerclseB will tako up tho entire forenoon. Tho Omaha cup will be tho prize for' the winning company. In addition two other cups will bo given to the first and second mon In tho individual drill contest. LaBt year Sergeant L. A. Welch of company C won tho first cup and 'Sergeant C. K. Payno of com pany I captured second. DANDELIONS HARD TO KILL. Professor Swezey Says It Will Spring Up from Piece of Root. Many people have spoken deroga tlngly of Dandelion day, and sneer Ingly pointed to tho yellow flowers that still remain on the campus. Pro fessor Swezey, who from his Incessant warfare on tho "yellow peril" may bo called an authority, said that although tho dandelions were not killed and would spring up ngaln, tho work dono on Dandelion day was of great value In that It retarded the future growth of tho plant to a largo extent. It is prac tically tmposBlble to kill a dandelion oxcent bv comnlotolv rtlpplnor tliA I whole plant out. If only a small por tion of the root Is left In the ground, It will spring up again. Experiments at the station have shown that the plant will spring from a .piece of the root an Inch long. As lU-was-manlfestly Impossible to com- pletely dig up every dandelion onf tho campus in three hours, it Is to bo ex pected that tho golde.n-headed pest would soon reappear. But Professor Swezey was positive that cutting the plant below the crown, as was dono Friday, would do much to discourage tho growth. Repeated applications of Friday's remedy will completely erad lcnto It in a fow yenrs. WALT Stands for tho Latost and host in Music. 121R O t.
