WHY 18 A COLLEGE?
A forum nrticlo in yesterday's No
brnBknn by a soiuowhat eminent critic
toomoaned tho fact that tho editorial
columns havo been used In treating
things "lamentably shallow." Tho
Ideal of tho collogo paper which Is to
puff up everything wiiotnor lfTT gaodtj.
or bad was alBO sot forth In scholarly
form. Thoro was a clover picking of
phrases hdro and thoro that demon
strated great Intellectual ability and

harm Is done since tho Nebraskan is
square against this "mingling with
follows" our learned critic talks about
on tho library stops. It hinders thoso
who wish to go in and out of tho
building.
Tho policy of the Nebraskan Is to
remain unchanged for all that. It will
still boost Nobraska by attempting to
mako It a more worthy Institution In
calling attention to matters that need
correction. A collogo paper exists for
practical purposes. It Is not an ngency
by which a soothing Balvo 1b rubbed
on tho woimds of tho wrong doer;
neither Is It a hot air pump to carry
on a wind-Jamming campaign to mako
worthless objects and nuisances ap.
pear useful and beneficial.
Wo would call tho learned' gentle
man's attention to tho fact that his
ponotratlvo mind has traveled too fast
and missel a great deal In tho rapid
transit. The University of Nebraska
is something which is to exist perma
nently and is no bubble that needs
blowing up. .Neither is the Nebraskan
an. advertising bulletin not a soft
soaper. Tho university was estab
lished for tho purposo of Btudy. It
was Intended as a' place to cultivate
tho mind. Energy and ambition are
looked up to. Tho development of .the
-aHjoupd, man. JsBQughL-JI!herjaaiia
hops, proms, parties and dances galore
to interest thoso socially inclined. But
tho school is a place for work. Tho
"mingling with one's fellows" (and wo
infer tho mingling with feilow women)
Is nil right, but it has its place. It
does not belong in the library or in
tho class room.
Already thoro have been too many
in our Institution who havo adopted
tho philosopher's wisdom. They make
lifo miserable for their instructors and
students who havo some aim and pur
pose In lifo. The hardest problem
which tho colleges today havo to solve
is to get young people over tho Idea
that they have really come out of the
kindergarten. We do not wnnt a lot of
grinds in our school, nor do we desire
to havo It like a military academy.
What wo want is men and women who
havo a high senso of self-responsibility,
for whom it 1b unnecessary to pro
scribe rules of conduct. We want tho
pooplo -who can use discretion and j
common sense, who know tho time for
pleasure and tho time for work.. The
"fiiBser" and the "coquette" havo n
place of courso, because everything
has Its placo. But civilization has
reached a stage of progress and is go
ing forward so rapidly that there Is lit
tlo tlmo for these dummies of frivol
ity. But tho world Is kind and Is will
ing to let them alone. Now if they
would bo equally kind' and carry on
tholr operations without Injuring those
who aro In collogo for business, the
majority would bo very thankful In
deed. Did you got a drink at tho fountain
on tho campus yesterday?
If you want to shake this spell of
dull feeling out of your frame got out
on tho cinder path and tako the medl
clno prescribed by Coach Field.
