THROWING UP THE SPONGE.
Sovoro criticism 1b all that wo can
have for tho sophomoro basketball
toam for Its conduct In tho sonlor-
sophomoro gamo Thursday night. For
gross that aro now being hold In Lin
coln. Somo havo tho Idea that It Is a
dry affair and thoro 1b nothing to In
terest tho student. This is a gravo
miBtako. Tho subjects that como up
for discussion concern questions that
aro of vital Intorost to tho peoplo of
tho stato and nation. Thcso same
probloms must bo met by university
men and women ovory day If they in
tend to tako an active part In politi
cal and industrial affairs.
Tho conservation move, as It may
bo termed, 1b a now one. Tho last
fow years It has been agitated in ono
way and anothor until now It Is com
manding tho attention of tho whole
country. Tho groat problems which
concorn tho futuro wolfaro of tho raco
must bo met now. Wo can not go on
wastlngi our national and stato re
sources without Jeopardizing tho
prosperity of years to como. Tho
loading thlnkors of tho world havo
boon theorizing along certain lines for
somo tlmo and have succeeded only
in so far that thoy havo aroused) the
peoplo.
Tho largo universities aro taking an
Intorost In tho attempts to reach a so
lution of tho tptroblom. Courses are
devoted to tho study of tho same
questions under tho guiso of differ
ent namcB. Nebraska Btudents havo
had an opportunity to hear tho mat-
tor discussed from a practical view
point and should havo profited much.
Did you seo tho Cornhuskors play
basketball last night? If you did not
you Buro missed something and must
not foil to seo the gamo this ovening.

ltsolf with glory by putting up a gamo
fight to tho finish. Tho sophomores
did not seem to caro for any such hon
ors. Thoy woro unwlH'ng to tako any
chances on tho probability of a change
of luck. Thoy came out, mado ono
short, feoblo attompt and then "throw
up tho sponge." Inglorious and hu
miliating was tholr downfall! Tho
froshmen fared no hotter at tho hands
of tho juniors but thoy stayed in tho
gamo. It took tho whole tlmo to pile
up a..larger score on them and tholr do

How many games would tho football

Tlmo and again tho contest Is not de

play. Many times something will hap
pen at the last moment that will on
ablo tho losors to recover what thoy

which wo aro so proud is that Bplrlt
which' neve,r knows defeat. Tho ath
lete who says, "What's tho ubo," when
fato is against him is not a truo No-
braslcan. Perhaps tho sophomores
would havo been beaten anyhow, but
tha is no excuso for mollycoddllsm.
