FAVORS SOUTHERN SYSTEM.
Dean Davis Discussed Student Honor
at Convocation.
Dean Davis spoke at tho convocation
hour Tuesday morning, giving a brief
resume of tho "honor system" as it Ib
enforced in tho south, and 'made an
SlftJ'CIO M02HA W .? .!
urgent and frank appeal to tho stuT
dents of this university to follow up
tho example set hy the southern- col
leges, in tho way of barring students
who Indulge In the practice of cheat
ing and lying.
Tho southerner takes as a matter
of courBo that a man when being de
tected cheating should be reported Im
mediately, according to tho dean, and
when onco detected tho offender does
not think of making excuses. He
knows tho sentiment to bo strong
enough that it will bo useless for him
to present any defense if ho is actu
ally guilty of the offense.
"Until Nebraska students take this
stand the system of honor which they
aro endeavoring to adopt will bo a
failure," said tho dean. "Thoy must
exercise moro charity toward indepen
dence and honest expression of opin
ion. Besides being instruments where
by honesty may bo enforced, it is not
difficult to see that a sentiment al
lowing such freedom will produce
nothing but benefit."
Dean Davis' remarks were forceful
and to tho point. Ho was heard by a
very small audience, but as Professor
Grummann said, "We can not take
this a& a sign of indifference on tho
part of tho students when wo consider
that the press of examinations and tho
closing up of tho affairs of flle sem
ester may have afforded many a stu
dent a good excuse tor not attending."
